The present invention relates to platelet-shaped zinc-magnesium pigments, wherein the platelet-shaped zinc-magnesium pigments comprise the 40.8 to 67.8 mol % of zinc, 32.2 to 59.2 mol % of magnesium and 0 to 7 mol % of Mn, Li, Be, Y, Sn, Al, Ti, Fe, Cu and mixtures thereof, based in each case on the total molar amount of the elements Zn, Mg, Mn, Be, Y, Li, Sn, Al, Ti, Fe and Cu, where the molar percentages add up to 100 mol %, and the median thickness h.sub.50 of the pigments is less than 1 μm. Method of production of an aluminum plated steel sheet having excellent corrosion resistance with respect to alcohol or mixed gasoline of same and appearance

The present invention relates to aluminum plated steel sheet which does not require coating after plating and is high in production flexibility enabling application of conventional production processes as they are or exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to flex fuels and further is excellent in appearance and to fuel tanks characterized by being produced using the steel sheet. The Si, Mg, Ca, and Ti ingredients in the aluminum plating layer are defined and the cooling method after hot dip aluminum coating is controlled to make Mg.sub.2Si particles with a long axis of 10 μm or less and an aspect ratio of 1 to 3 finely disperse in the plating layer. Due to the Mg.sub.2Si particles, it is possible to give an excellent corrosion resistance to flex fuels and suppress the deterioration in appearance due to MgO.

Zn alloy plated steel material having excellent weldability and processed-part corrosion resistance and a method for production of Zn alloy plated steel material are provided. In the Zn alloy plated steel material comprising base steel material and a Zn alloy plating layer, the Zn alloy plating layer includes, by wt %, Al: 0.1-5.0%, Mg: 0.1-5.0%, as well as a remainder of Zn and inevitable impurities. The Zn alloy plated steel material includes a lower interface layer and an upper interface layer between the base steel material and the Zn alloy plating layer, wherein the lower interface layer is formed on the base steel material and has a dense structure, and the upper interface layer is formed on the lower interface layer and has a network-type or island-type structure.

The hard coating layer includes at least a complex nitride or carbonitride layer (2) expressed by a composition formula: (Ti.sub.1-x-yAl.sub.xMe.sub.y)(C.sub.zN.sub.1-z), Me being an element selected from Si, Zr, B, V, and Cr. The average content ratio X, the average content ratio Y, and the average content ratio Z satisfy 0.60≦x.sub.avg, 0.005≦y.sub.avg≦0.10, 0≦z.sub.avg≦0.005, and 0.605≦x.sub.avg+y.sub.avg≦0.95. There are crystal grains having a cubic structure in the crystal grains constituting the complex nitride or carbonitride layer (2). A predetermined periodic content ratio change of Ti, Al and Me exists in the crystal grains having the cubic structure.

A surface-coated cutting tool includes a base material and a coating formed on the base material. The coating includes an α-Al.sub.2O.sub.3 layer. The α-Al.sub.2O.sub.3 layer contains a plurality of α-Al.sub.2O.sub.3 crystal grains and a plurality of κ-Al.sub.2O.sub.3 crystal grains, and has a TC(006) of more than 5 in a texture coefficient TC(hkl). A ratio of C.sub.κ to a sum of C.sub.α and C.sub.κ: [C.sub.κ/(C.sub.α+C.sub.κ)×100](%) is 0.05 to 7%, where C.sub.α is a total number of peak counts of the α-Al.sub.2O.sub.3 crystal grains obtained from measurement data of x-ray diffraction for the coating, and C.sub.κ is a total number of peak counts of the κ-Al.sub.2O.sub.3 crystal grains obtained from the measurement data of the x-ray diffraction for the coating.
