Direct contact heat transfer in the thermolysis reactor of hydrogen production Cu—Cl cycle

In the thermochemical water splitting process by CuCl cycle, oxygen gas is produced by a thermolysis process in a three-phase reactor. IN accordance with the teachings herein, a technique is provided to achieve the high challenging thermal requirements of the thermolysis reactor, whereby an optimized heat transfer configuration is used. The technique involves using some of the pre-heated stoichiometric oxygen gas produced from the thermolysis reaction, to transfer heat directly to the slurry of molten CuCl and solid Cu.sub.2OCl.sub.2 inside the thermolysis reactor. Experiments were performed to examine the volumetric heat transfer coefficient for the direct contact heat transfer between the gas and the slurry. It was found that the thermal scale up analysis of the thermolysis reactor with direct contact heat transfer, is based on the amount of heat carried by the oxygen gas rather than the amount of heat transferred by direct contact heat transfer.

Method of recovering copper and precious metals

Provided is a method of recovering copper and one or more precious metals comprising leaching copper-bearing ore and/or concentrate under atmospheric or slightly pressurized conditions at a temperature below the boiling point of the leach solution in a sulfuric acidic solution in the presence of one or more alkali metal or alkali earth metal halides, whereby the total halide concentration is from 30 to 115 g/L, to dissolve copper and to obtain a leaching liquor comprising copper, sulfur species, and halides in solution. The leaching liquor is then subjected to a solid-liquid separation after which a first aqueous pregnant leach solution and a copper depleted leaching residue are obtained. Copper is purified by solvent extraction from the first aqueous pregnant leach solution to obtain a first copper-containing loaded organic solution and a first aqueous raffinate. The copper containing loaded organic solution is stripped and copper is recovered.

A method for recovering hydrochloric acid and metal oxides from a chloride liquor is described. The method uses a chloride liquor including the metal and mixing the liquor and a matrix solution to produce a reaction mixture, wherein the matrix solution assists oxidation/hydrolysis of the metal with HCl production. In a preferred embodiment the matrix solution includes zinc chloride in various stages of hydration and an oxygen containing gas is added to the mix. A method where the improvement is the mixing of a liquor and a matrix solution where the solution assists hydrolysis of the metal with HCl production is also disclosed. The reactor is a column reactor in a preferred embodiment. Further disclosed is the method of using the matrix solution and a reactor for recovering hydrochloric acid and for oxidizing/hydrolysis of a metal.
