The saltwater to freshwater conversion cell includes a positive electrode; a negative electrode disposed opposite and parallel to the positive electrode; a first plastic perforated plate positioned adjacent to the positive electrode and between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; a second plastic perforated plate positioned adjacent to the negative electrode and between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; a power supply configured to generate an electric field between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; and a saltwater stream comprising a plurality of positively charged sodium ions and a plurality of negatively charged chloride ions, the saltwater stream flowing through the conversion cell. The positive electrode and the first plastic perforated plate define a chloride-dense water channel, the negative electrode and the second plastic perforated plate define a sodium-dense water channel, and the first plastic perforated plate and the second plastic perforated plate define a desalinated water channel. The electric field is configured to cause the plurality of negatively charged chloride ions in the saltwater stream to move through the first plastic perforated plate and into the chloride-dense water channel and the plurality of positively charged sodium ions in the saltwater stream to move through the second plastic perforated plate and into the sodium-dense water channel.

An activated carbon-based media for efficient removal of chloramines as well as chlorine and ammonia from an aqueous stream is presented, and a method for making the same. The method involves preparing activated carbon that remove chloramines efficiently from chloramine-rich aqueous media. In particular, this application relates to the use of high performance catalytically active carbon for an efficient removal of chloramine from drinking water in the form of a solid carbon block or granular carbon media. The activated carbon is treated with a nitrogen-rich compound, such as, melamine.

Systems for removing perchlorate from water

Provided are methods of removing perchlorate from water. The methods include contacting water suspected of containing perchlorate with a cationic material. The cationic material includes one or more cationic metal atoms connected by an atom or molecule into an extended structure, and a charge balancing anion. The contacting removes perchlorate (e.g., selectively), if present, from the water. Water treatment vessels, systems and facilities that find use in practicing the methods of the present disclosure are also provided.

A filtration system for a pet water fountain is provided. The filtration system utilizes a pump placed within or along a watering bowl. The water filtration system also utilizes a multi-stage filtering device. In one aspect, the multi-stage filtering device includes a first filtering stage representing copper zinc alloy particles, and a second filtering stage representing granulated activated carbon particles. Each stage may constitute filtering material that is separated into an array of cells residing along a vertical frame or is separated into stages placed in series within a tubular cartridge. A method for filtering water in a pet fountain is also provided herein.
