A process comprises cold-forming a flat glass substrate into a non-planar shape using a die. The cold-formed glass substrate is bonded to a non-planar rigid support structure at a plurality of non-planar points using the die. Bonding methods include injection molding the non-planar rigid support structure, and direct bonding. An article is also provided, comprising a cold-formed glass substrate having opposing major surfaces and a curved shape, the opposing major surfaces comprising a surface stress that differ from one another. The cold-formed glass substrate is attached to a rigid support structure having the curved shape. The cold-formed glass substrate includes an open region not in direct contact with the non-planar rigid support structure, and the open region has a curved shape maintained by the non-planar rigid support structure.

Contoured glass articles and methods of making the same

Embodiments of a method for making a contoured glass article and the resulting contoured glass article are disclosed. In one or more embodiments, the method includes cold bending a flat glass sheet having first and second opposing major surfaces, at least one region having a first thickness, and at least one region having a second thickness that is less than the first thickness, to produce cold bent glass sheet having at least one bend region along a portion of the at least one region having the second thickness; and restraining the cold bent glass sheet to produce the contoured glass article. One or more embodiments pertain to the resulting contoured glass article.

Method and system for cold-forming glass

Disclosed are embodiments of a method of forming a curved glass article. In the method, a mold having a curved surface is provided. A self-adhesive layer is disposed on the curved surface. A glass sheet is bent into conformity with the curved surface at a temperature less than the glass transition temperature of the glass sheet. The glass sheet includes a first major surface and a second major surface in which the second major surface is opposite to the first major surface. The first major surface is adhered to the self-adhesive layer. A frame is bonded to the second major surface of the glass sheet, and the glass sheet is removed from the self-adhesive layer. A system for performing the method and a mold having a self-adhesive layer are also disclosed.

THIN GLASS SUBSTRATE, METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ITS PRODUCTION

A thin glass substrate, as well as a method and an apparatus are provided. The glass substrate has a glass having first and second main surfaces and elongated elevations on one of the main surfaces. The elevations rise in a normal direction, have a longitudinal extent that is greater than two times a transverse extent, and have a height, on average, that is less than 100 nm, and with a transverse extent of the elevation smaller than 40 mm. The method includes melting a glass, hot forming the glass, and adjusting a viscosity of the glass so that for the viscosity η1 for a first stretch over a first distance of up to 1.5 m downstream of a flow rate control component and y1 indicating a second distance to a location immediately downstream the flow rate control component the equation lg η1(y1)/dPa.Math.s=(lg η01/dPa.Math.s+a1(y1)) applies.
