Polyimide dispersants and methods of making and using thereof

Provided herein are polyimide dispersants, as well as methods for producing polyimide dispersants. The polyimides can be defined by the formula below ##STR00001##
wherein A, individually for each occurrence, represents a cyclic diimide moiety represented by the structure below ##STR00002##
where B represents a cyclic moiety substituted with a first cyclic imide group and a second cyclic imide group; Y, individually for each occurrence, represents a bivalent linking group; L, individually for each occurrence, is absent or represents a cyclic imide group; R, individually for each occurrence, represents a polymeric tail; and n is an integer from 1 to 20.

(2) A cylinder lubricating oil composition for a crosshead diesel engine, comprising: a lubricant base oil; (B) a Ca sulfonate detergent having a base number of no less than 10 mgKOH/g and less than 60 mgKOH/g; (C) a Ca phenate detergent having a base number of 55 to 200 mgKOH/g; (D′) an amine antioxidant; and (E′) a zinc dithiophosphate, wherein the composition has a base number of no less than 15 mgKOH/g and less than 120 mgKOH/g.

The engine oil contains a major amount of a base oil and a dispersant reaction product of A) a hydrocarbyl-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, and B) at least one polyamine, that is post-treated with C) an aromatic carboxylic acid, an aromatic polycarboxylic acid, or an aromatic anhydride, wherein all carboxylic acid or anhydride groups of C) are attached directly to an aromatic ring. A molar ratio of carboxyl groups from components A) and C) to nitrogen atoms from component B) of from 0.9 to 1.3 is used to make the dispersant which also has a molar ratio of component C) to component B) of at least 0.4 and when component B) has an average of 4-6 nitrogen atoms per molecule, a molar ratio of A) to B) is from 1.0 to 1.6.
