Disclosed is a fruit harvesting apparatus (FHA) and method of use. The FHA provides for extended reach harvesting of fruit while eliminating the need for a ladder in order to reach the fruit and for facilitating the fruit's damage-free movement from a tree to a basket or like fruit storage bin. The FHA comprises a fruit harvesting head, a handle, and a chute. In practice, a user, holding the handle, positions the harvest head around a piece of fruit such as an apple that is hanging on a tree, so that the apple is located within the head. The user then moves the head such that the stem of the apple is caught in a notch of the head, and pulls the apparatus such that the apple stem is severed and such that the apple falls into the chute and descends into a fruit receptacle without bruising or damage.

This invention is a mechanical harvesting device which uses a novel approach to cut stems on agricultural products such as apples. The device is comprised of a system including levers and a unique cutting blade profile which allows for directional transfer of force from the wrists and forearms to effectuate cutting. The device is designed so that the cutting of stems on agricultural products can be performed separately and autonomously by both arms, thus offering improvements in efficiency and safety over other harvesting practices where the cutting is performed using both hands together. Current improvements include revisions to the product interface and safety guide as well as new versions of the device, employing many of the same design elements but having as the main difference a powered motor to actuate the cutting sequence in place of levers. Future improvements include options for data generation using electronic signal processing to tabulate periodic count totals on harvested product. Such data would help growers and marketers gather valuable information about crop sizing and labor efficiency.

A device for picking a piece of fruit from a fruit plant. The device includes locating members arranged to be positioned around a piece of fruit to be picked. The locating members are actuatable from an open position to receive the piece of fruit between the locating members to a closed position to surround the stem by which the piece of fruit is attached to the fruit plant. The device also includes a mechanism for detaching the piece of fruit to be picked from the fruit plant. The mechanism is mounted on or relative to one or more of the plurality of locating members, and wherein the mechanism is arranged to detach the piece of fruit from the plant when the plurality of locating members are in the closed position.

An extendable garden shears includes: an outer tube, an inner tube, a telescopic control set, a cutting structure, a wheel unit and a pull string. Through the combination of the above structure, the shears are extendable without the pull string being directly exposed, and the shears has a cutting structure capable of providing different cutting angles.
