The present application relates to a backer rod for sealing a void. The backer rod comprises an extruded polymer foam composed of crosslinked linear low density polyethylene and poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) and contains an insecticide. Exemplar insecticides include termiticides such as bifenthrin, permethrin, deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, alpha-cypermethrin, zeta-cypermethrin, tetramethrin, and cyfluthrin. The backer rod may be used as physical and chemical barrier to prevent the ingress of insects into a structure.

The apparatus includes an opaque housing and a heat strip configured to have separate temperature zones. The method includes warming the heat strip to lure the mites into the trap, heating outer heat strip segments to drive the mites toward the center of the trap, and then raising the entire heat strip to a temperature sufficient to exterminate the mites. The system includes placing one or more of the traps in animal hold structures, including nesting boxes in poultry houses.

The stem can be slideably received by the elongate channel to enable the suction member to slide with respect to the tubular member. The system can include a catch that protrudes from the stem. The catch may be arranged and configured to receive a portion of an insect filter pod and thereby couple the insect filter pod between the tubular member and the suction member.

The tapering space is accessible to bed bugs crawling on the outer surface of the inner element through a base opening defined between the outer surface of the inner element and the second base. An adhesive (6) is provided on at least part of the inner surface of the outer element for adhering to the dorsal side (4) of a bed bug crawling on the outer surface of the inner element. The invention further relates to a method of detecting and/or trapping bed bugs.

The system can include a mosquito staging subsystem; a robotic pick-and-place station; and a dissection, extrusion, collection, and disposal subsystem. The subsystems can include one or more stations to provide orientation, decapitation, extrusion of salivary glands, and disposal of carcasses of the mosquitoes. The resident live sporozoites from the salivary glands can be used to produce Plasmodium SPZ-based vaccines.

A trap for certain insect pests may be configured to be particularly suitable for bedbugs and take the form of a foldable pitfall bedbug trap. The pitfall trap walls extend vertically upwardly at an angle and are sufficiently rough to permit bedbugs to climb to an upper edge of the trap, whereas the inner surfaces of the pitfall trap walls have been treated with a smooth material, such as being laminated, causing bedbugs at the upper edge to fall upon initiating contact with the inner pitfall walls and their smooth characteristics. The resultant foldable pitfall bedbug trap is relatively inexpensive to produce and easily user-deployable.
