At least one impact-resistant flexible pad is integrally attached to the bottoms and is sized and positioned to substantially cover a zone of likely contact, including the athlete's shins, knees, thighs, hips, hip creases, shoulders, and upper back. The flexible pad dampens impact forces applied to the zones of likely contact.

The elements define corresponding open ventilation passages therebetween, providing greater comfort for the wearer during warm weather. Each of the elements is formed of at least one distinct layer. Yet another layer may also be foam-filled and covered with a stretch fabric for comfort. Additional knee, shoulder, and chest protection is provided by removable rigid plates.

Some embodiments also incorporate other fabrics, such as aramid variants, while non-cut-resistant sections may be made from blends like polyester and spandex.
