The invention relates to a backing for an earring, and to an earring with a backing. The backing is particularly suitable for a stud earring but is not limited to those applications and can also be used for a drop earring or hook earring if desired. The backing has a hole which is sized to accommodate a post of the earring and to be a frictional fit upon the post, the backing having a substantially planar surface which lies against the user's ear lobe in use, the hole extending in a direction which is substantially aligned with the substantially planar surface. The earring has a post with a first portion, a second portion and a bend between the first portion and the second portion. The backing is designed to fit to the second portion.

A sharps protector is formed of a hard, pierce-resistant shell filled with a receptor material. One or two ends of the shell provide entry, and a center or end wall is a pierce-resistant barrier limiting pin push-through. The receptor material is set back at each entry end, thereby establishing a pre-entry pocket that prealigns the pin for accurate entry. An accessory system can be used to decorate articles with ornaments. The system includes a button-snap connector. The button-snap connector includes a male portion and a female portion. The button-snap connector allows a user to select a particular ornament to be worn on an article of clothing or the like. Likewise, the button-snap connector allows a particular ornament to be used with different articles. The system also include an accessory that can be placed around the button-snap connector to further customize and decorate the article.
