A surgical instrument end effector assembly includes a first jaw member defining an insulative tissue-contacting surface and first and second electrically-conductive tissue-contacting surfaces disposed on either side of the insulative tissue-contacting surface. A second jaw member includes an ultrasonic blade body positioned to oppose the insulative tissue-contacting surface of the first jaw member. The first jaw member is movable relative to the second jaw member between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position to apply a first grasping force to tissue disposed therebetween. A slider is movable, independent of the first jaw member, between a retracted position, wherein the slider is disposed proximally of the first and second jaw members, and an extended position, wherein the slider extends about the first jaw member and urges the first jaw member from the approximated position further towards the second jaw member to apply a second, greater grasping force to tissue.

GRASP OVER-RIDE FOR IN-LINE VESSEL SEALER

A surgical instrument includes a housing having a shaft with an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end thereof that includes first and second jaw members configured to treat tissue upon electrical activation thereof. A first handle is movable relative to the housing and is configured to move the jaw members relative to one other to grasp tissue therebetween. A switch is disposed on the housing and in the actuation path of the first handle, the switch configured for activation by the first handle when the first handle is fully actuated relative to the housing. An over-ride is disposed in the housing and is movable between a first position configured to block full actuation of the first handle relative to the housing to prevent activation of the switch and a second position allowing full actuation of the first handle and activation of the switch.

Medical systems, devices, and related methods

A medical device includes a shaft including a distal end including a passive electrode that defines a central opening extending through the passive electrode, and an active electrode within the central opening. The active electrode is movable between at least an extended position in which the active electrode does not contact the passive electrode, and a retracted position in which the active electrode contacts the passive electrode.

An electrode assembly for an electrosurgical instrument includes a housing configured to operably receive a distal end of an electrosurgical instrument shaft, the housing encapsulating an insulative core sandwiched between a pair of return electrodes. The insulative core includes a slot defined about a periphery thereof configured to partially receive an active electrode. The active electrode and the pair of return electrodes are adapted to connect to opposite polarities of an electrosurgical generator. A tensioning mechanism is configured to tension the active electrode about the insulative core during assembly.

An instrument including working arms and a moveable member. The working arms include a first arm, a second arm, a first electrode located on the first arm, and a second electrode located on the second arm. The moveable member includes a passive circuit element, a first terminal, and a second terminal. The moveable member is moveable to a first position and a second position. In the first position, the first terminal is in electrical communication with the first electrode and the second terminal is in electrical communication with the second electrode so that in the first position an electrical circuit is completed. An impedance is measured of the passive circuit element in the completed electrical circuit. The instrument is adapted to provide a modality based on the measured impedance or a determined position of the moveable member.

RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION CATHETER AND RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION SYSTEM

A radio-frequency ablation catheter comprises a handle having a proximal end and a distal end, an outer tube assembly having a proximal end and a distal end, and an inner tube assembly having a proximal end and a distal end; the proximal end of the outer tube assembly is connected to the distal end of the handle; the proximal end of the inner tube assembly is connected to the distal end of the handle; the inner tube assembly can be driven by the handle to rotate relative to the outer tube assembly; the inner tube assembly comprises a branch electrode assembly, and the branch electrode assembly comprises a plurality of branch electrodes distributed at intervals in the circumferential direction. The branch electrode assembly of the radio-frequency ablation catheter and the radio-frequency ablation system can rotate relative to the outer tube assembly to avoid blood vessels.
