TECHNIQUES FOR QUANTITATIVELY ASSESSING TEAR-FILM DYNAMICS
Aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for quantitatively assessing tear-film dynamics associated with contact lenses. An example method includes projecting an image of one or more shapes on a tear film surface of the contact lens worn on the eye, capturing video data, comprising a plurality of image frames, of the one or more shapes projected on the tear film surface of the contact lens over a period of time, performing image segmentation on a plurality of reflection patterns included in the plurality of image frames, generating a plurality of maps of the tear film surface of the contact lens indicating changes to the tear film surface of the contact lens during the period of time, and outputting, based on the plurality of maps, one or more metrics quantifying the changes to the tear film surface of the contact lens over the period of time.
System and method for treating meibomian gland dysfunction
Systems and methods of treating meibomian and sebaceous gland dysfunction. The methods include reducing oxygen concentration in the environment of one or more dysfunctional meibomian and sebaceous glands, thereby restoring a hypoxic status of one or more dysfunctional meibomian and sebaceous glands. The reducing of the oxygen concentration is accomplished by restricting blood flow to the one or more dysfunctional meibomian and sebaceous glands and the environment of one or more dysfunctional meibomian sebaceous glands. The restricting of the blood flow is accomplished by contracting or closing one or more blood vessels around the one or more dysfunctional meibomian or sebaceous glands. The methods also include giving local or systemic drugs that lead to the generation of hypoxia-inducible factors in one or more dysfunctional meibomian and sebaceous glands.
Methods and Apparatus for Positioning a Structure on a Polymer Layer
Methods and apparatus for positioning a structure on a polymer layer are described. A method may involve forming a first polymer layer. The method may further involve positioning, by an apparatus, a structure on the first polymer layer, where the apparatus comprises a rod having a first end that supports the structure as the structure is being positioned and a plunger located around the first end of the rod that presses the structure onto the first polymer layer as the structure is being positioned. And the method may involve forming a second polymer layer over the first polymer layer and the structure, where the first polymer layer defines a first side of a body-mountable device and the second polymer layer defines a second side of the body-mountable device opposite the first side.
COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR TREATMENT
The present invention provides compounds and methods for the treatment of LFA-1 mediated diseases. In particular, LFA-1 antagonists are described herein and these antagonists are used in the treatment of LFA-1 mediated diseases. One aspect of the invention provides for diagnosis of an LFA-1 mediated disease and administration of a LFA-1 antagonist, after the patient is diagnosed with a LFA-1 mediated disease. In some embodiments, the LFA-1 mediated diseases treated are dry eye disorders. Also provided herein are methods for identifying compounds which are LFA-1 antagonists.

According to some aspects, a device is presented herein that is configured to be located underneath an eyelid and worn by a user for treating dry eye. The device includes a first surface configured to face a portion of a sclera of the eye, and a second surface configured to face an eyelid and to be completely covered by the eyelid. In some embodiments, the device further includes a plurality of stimulation electrodes proximal to the first surface, wherein the plurality of stimulation electrodes is configured to stimulate the sclera. The device further includes an energy storage element coupled to the plurality of stimulation electrodes. The energy storage element is configured to supply power to the plurality of stimulation electrodes. The device further includes a processor configured to control a supply of energy from the energy storage element to the plurality of stimulation electrodes to stimulate the sclera.
Apparatus and method of a multifunctional ophthalmic instrument
A multifunctional ophthalmic instrument and method for assessing ocular surface health is disclosed. The instrument includes an illumination projector, which contains broadband light sources, covering visible and near infrared spectra, a zoom lens system with continuously variable magnification, a detection system to record said images, and a computer to display and analyze said images. Preferably, an eye alignment system with a beamsplitter is used to provide a fixation target for the eye under assessment. An optional thermal camera, operating in the long wave infrared spectrum is aligned paraxially to the zoom lens system. Further, an optional separate video camera is used to monitor the blink rate. Corneal topography and tear break up time could be evaluated with a low magnification, and microscopic features, such as tear meniscus height, meibomian gland orifices, are imaged at a high magnification. Meibomian glands and lipid layer thickness are analyzed with visible and near infrared spectra.
