Prophylactic bactericidal medical device
A medical implant system is described for inhibiting infection associated with a joint prosthesis implant. An inventive system includes an implant body made of a biocompatible material which has a metal component disposed on an external surface of the implant body. A current is allowed to flow to the metal component, stimulating release of metal ions toxic to microbes, such as bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses. One detailed system is completely surgically implantable in the patient such that no part of the system is external to the patient while the system is in use. In addition, externally controlled devices are provided which allow for modulation of implanted components.

Disclosed is a device for positioning a resurfacing prosthesis, including: a gripping and handling instrument for a main body of a resurfacing prosthesis; a connecting body, interposed between said gripping and handling instrument and said main body of said resurfacing prosthesis and suitable to connect them; a coupler which secures said connecting body to said main body, said coupler comprising: a plurality of bonding elements adapted to be interlocked, in an irremovable manner, in respective recesses provided in said connecting body; and a shear releaser, interposed between said main body of said resurfacing prosthesis and said connecting body, adapted to detach said connecting body from said main body. A system and method for allowing any surgeon, including those surgeons who perform a fewer number of a replacement procedure as compared to a more experienced surgeon who performs a greater number of procedures, to provide an improved likelihood of a favorable outcome approaching, if not exceeding, a likelihood of a favorable outcome as performed by a very experienced surgeon with the replacement procedure. Force sensing is included to aid in quantifying installation of an implant, particularly a cup into a pelvic bone.
Protective Sheath For Medical Implant
A combined assembly of a medical implant and a sheath includes a medical implant having a surface and a sheath that is releasably secured to and protectively covers the surface of the medical implant. The sheath may protectively cover some or all of the surface of the medical implant. The sheath may be frictionally or mechanically retained on the medical implant. The medical implant may include both an inner surface and an outer surface, and the sheath may include both an inner sheath portion and an outer sheath portion. The sheath may include one or more perforations, a gripping structure that cooperates with a handling tool, or a handle.

Use of lipids for preventing fretting corrosion in the modular tapers of orthopedic implants
The use of lipids in the taper junction or other metal on metal interface of a modular orthopedic implant to prevent fretting corrosion and increase the pull off load. The incorporation of lipids or a lipid-like substrate within the taper junction increases the onset load and decreases the amount of corrosion. The incorporation of lipids also increases the pull-off load necessary to separate the head from the neck. As a result, the use of lipids in the taper junction of an orthopedic implant should reduce the need for revisions of implants, such as such as knee and hip replacements, which are often needed because of fretting corrosion.
