The assistive device accommodates active power generation when needed, but is otherwise configured to switch to passive control for other tasks. The assistive device further includes a continuously variable transmission to optimize movement of the assistive device for a variety of tasks. The assistive device includes a lower limb embodiment defining an artificial knee joint controlled by the plurality of control systems.
ADJUSTABLE PROSTHESIS LEG
A prosthetic system includes a prosthetic knee having a controller and a hydraulic unit pivotally connected to the controller. The hydraulic includes a reserve hydraulic cylinder, a brake hydraulic cylinder, and a hydraulic cylinder having a lower hydraulic compartment. A flow system fluidly connects the hydraulic cylinder, the reserve hydraulic cylinder, and the brake cylinder. The flow system has first and second flow paths in communication with the lower hydraulic compartment and the reserve hydraulic cylinder. The first flow path is in communication with lower hydraulic compartment and the reserve hydraulic cylinder via the brake cylinder. The second flow path bypasses the brake hydraulic cylinder.
SMART KNEE JOINT FOR A HUMAN LOWER LIMB EXOSKELETON, A PROSTHESIS AND AN ORTHOSIS
The present application relates to a smart knee joint for a human lower limb exoskeleton, a prosthesis, and an orthosis. The smart knee joint reproduces part or all of the biomechanics of the knee joint of the human body by using a motor driving unit and a controllable elastic energy storage unit based on a magnetorheological damper. The motor driving unit here can be replaced with a controllable damping unit. The smart knee joint is developed for helping amputees or patients with impaired mobility regain/repair natural gaits and also reduce their burden of walking. The motor drive unit operates in a generator mode and an actuator mode. Energy harvesting technologies are exploited to reduce the power consumption of the smart knee joint then to prolong the working time. In addition, the controllable elastic energy storage unit based on the magnetorheological damper can further reduce the energy consumption of the smart knee joint, and also simplify the control of the knee joint.
Low Voltage Electrostatic Jamming Device
At least some embodiments of the present disclosure an electrostatic sheet jamming device comprising a first sheet having a first conductive layer, a first dielectric layer disposed adjacent to the first conductive layer, and a second sheet comprising a second conductive layer and disposed proximate to the first dielectric layer. The first dielectric layer is disposed between the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer. The first sheet and the second sheet are non-extensible and flexible, wherein the first sheet and the second sheet are slidable relative to each other in a first state. The first sheet and the second sheet are jammed with each other in a second state when a voltage is applied between the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer. In some embodiments, the applied voltage is less than or equal to a break-down voltage of air at a distance between the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR AN ARTICULATING ANKLE
A hydraulic ankle assembly to be used by a user, wherein the ankle assembly includes a base configured to be attached to a spring assembly, a hydraulic cylinder rotatably attached to the base and configured to dampen rotation of the hydraulic ankle assembly, and a prosthetic adapter portion rotatably attached to the base and the hydraulic cylinder and configured to be attached to a prosthetic worn by the user. The base, the hydraulic cylinder, and the prosthetic adapter portion define a force triangle that defines an axis of rotation of the hydraulic ankle assembly. The axis of rotation is positioned in line with the center of mass of the user when the user is standing. The force triangle reduces forces on the hydraulic cylinder.
METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR CONTROLLING A PROSTHETIC OR ORTHOTIC DEVICE
A prosthetic or orthotic device (POD) can include first and second limb members coupled at a joint, an actuator, and a controller. The actuator can be configured to actuate the first limb member relative to the second limb member. The controller can cause the actuator to exhibit a force rejection behavior during a portion of stance phase and cause the actuator to exhibit a force following behavior during a portion of swing phase. The controller can, based on a determination that a gait parameter satisfies a gait parameter threshold, cause the actuator to at least one of: apply a first torque at the joint to cause the POD to flex during a portion of stance phase, decelerate flexion of the POD during at least a first portion of the swing phase, or decelerate extension of the POD during at least a second portion of the swing phase.
PROSTHETIC KNEE WITH SWING ASSIST
The present disclosure provides for a device and method of control for an artificial prosthetic knee. A prosthetic knee according to the present disclosure relies on strictly passive means of providing support during weight bearing and supplements a resistive swing-phase mechanism with a small powered actuator. This actuator adds power to the knee, exclusively during swing phase, to improve swing-phase behavior. In particular, the knee still relies on the resistive swing-phase mechanism to provide nominal swing-phase knee motion, but supplements that motion as needed with the small powered actuator.
Artificial joints using agonist-antagonist actuators
Artificial limbs and joints that behave like biological limbs and joints employ a synthetic actuator which consumes negligible power when exerting zero force, consumes negligible power when outputting force at constant length (isometric) and while performing dissipative, nonconservative work, is capable of independently engaging flexion and extension tendon-like, series springs, is capable of independently varying joint position and stiffness, and exploits series elasticity for mechanical power amplification.
PROSTHETIC KNEE JOINT WITH ELECTRONICALLY-CONTROLLED TRANSMISSION
A knee prosthesis or orthosis includes at least one moveable joint and a torque modulating unit. The torque modulating unit is configured to impose a controllable torque on the at least one moveable joint. The torque modulating unit includes at least one of a motor or brake. The at least one of the motor or brake is coupled to the at least one moveable joint via an electronically-controlled transmission. The electronically-controlled transmission is a two-speed transmission.
Reactive layer control system for prosthetic devices
A variable gain impedance controller for use in a control system for controlling a motorized prosthetic or orthotic apparatus provided with a joint. The controller comprises a sensor input for receiving a signal indicative of an interaction between the apparatus and the ground, a torque sensor input for receiving a signal indicative of the torque at the joint, and a variable gain scheduler in communication with the sensor input to receive data therefrom thereby providing a variable torque gain. The variable gain impedance controller adjusts its control on the apparatus based on the variable torque gain and the indicated torque to increase the joint resistance to motion when the signal received from the sensor input indicates an interaction between the apparatus and the ground, and decrease the joint resistance to motion when the signal received from the sensor input indicates an absence of interaction between the apparatus and the ground.
