Hemocompatibility of superhemophobic titania surfaces
In this work, we investigated the blood platelet adhesion and activation of truly superhemophobic surfaces and compared them with that of hemophobic surfaces and hemophilic surfaces. Our analysis indicates that only those superhemophobic surfaces with a robust Cassie-Baxter state display significantly lower platelet adhesion and activation. The understanding gained through this work will lead to the fabrication of improved hemocompatible, superhemophobic medical implants.
GEARED CONTINUOULSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION
A geared continuously variable transmission (GCVT) is provided. The GCVT includes a first set of solar gears having a first solar gear and first plurality of connection components. Power enters the GCVT through the first set of solar gears. The GCVT includes a second set of solar gears having a second solar gear and second plurality of connection components. Power exits the GCVT through the second set of solar gears. Power is transmitted from the first set of solar gears to the second set of solar gears via the first plurality of connection components and the second plurality of connection components. The GCVT includes a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor connecting first component from the first plurality of connection components to second component from the second plurality of connection components and providing constant rotation ratio between the first component and the second component.
Articles having non-fouling surfaces and processes for preparing the same including pretreatment of articles
Processes are described herein for preparing medical devices and other articles having a low-fouling surface on a substrate comprising a polymeric surface. The polymeric surface material may possess a range of polymeric backbones and substituents while providing the articles with a highly efficient, biocompatible, and non-fouling surface. The processes involve treating the substrate to reduce the concentration of chemical species on the surface of or in the substrate without altering the bulk physical properties of the device or article, and thereafter forming a grafted polymer layer on the treated substrate surface.
Method for treatment medical devices made from nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloys
The present invention improves the surface modification of NiTi alloys used for instance in medical devices through treatment with hydrogen particles in a suitable gaseous discharge and with oxygen atoms. The technique according to the present invention provides the formation of biocompatible solely titanium oxide layer thus preventing nickel to be present in the top surface layer. Furthermore this enables nanostructuring of the surface which depends on the treatment conditions. Devices made from NiTi alloys treated with the method according to the present invention have improved biocompatibility; platelets do not readily attach and activate on such surfaces and the thrombus formation rate is reduced in comparison with extensively used untreated NiTi alloys.
Tubular woven fabric
A tubular woven fabric is useful as a transport hose for a fluid or a powder, as a protective hose for linear bodies such as wires, cables and conduits, as a tubular filter, or as a base material of a vascular prosthesis. The tubular woven fabric includes warp yarns and weft yarns interwoven with each other, the tubular woven fabric having an outer diameter with a variation of within 10% along the warp direction and satisfying the formula:
(L2−L1)/L1≤0.1.
CLOT ADHESION PREVENTING AGENT AND BLOOD COLLECTION CONTAINER
Provided is a clot adhesion preventing agent capable of suppressing adhesion of clot to the inner wall surface of a blood collection container. The clot adhesion preventing agent according to the present invention includes a polyether compound or a silicone oil, and an amino acid.
VASCULAR DEVICE AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A VASCULAR DEVICE
A vascular device for insertion in a body lumen, wherein the device includes a surface including at least a portion that is a functionalized surface provided with double or more charged ions such that the ions are exposed to a bodily fluid when the vascular device is inserted in the body lumen. The vascular device allows for reducing complications in its use and, particularly, for improving a desired healing in the body and preventing restenosis. At the same time, it allows for being manufactured at comparably low effort and for a convenient handling.
(L2L1)/L10.1.
