A breakaway connector apparatus including a housing and a breakaway component is configured for attachment directly to a needle-free fitting on an intravenous line. The breakaway connector apparatus includes only one valve. The apparatus is configured to open both the valve and a seal on the needle-free fitting when the breakaway component is attached to the needle-free fitting. When tension is applied to the connector, the breakaway component is configured to detach from the apparatus while remaining attached to the needle-free fitting, thereby closing the valve on the apparatus and also closing the seal on the needle-free fitting. In some embodiments, the breakaway connector apparatus includes one or more securing arms and one or more corresponding securing bars to prevent re-connection of the apparatus following disengagement of the breakaway component from the apparatus.

Thus, a length of tubing is manufactured that includes a plurality of segments of different flexibilities and the length of tubing is then cut into a plurality of sub-lengths of tubing that are suitable for use as a component of a medical device. In one embodiment, a method of manufacturing a length of catheter tubing comprises: extruding a base layer; overlaying a braided layer on the base layer; overlaying a sub-jacket layer over the braided layer; overlaying an outer jacket on the jacket sub-layer; and heating at least a portion the jacket sub-layer to change a characteristic of the length of catheter tubing.

A controller executes a sterile connection procedure in which a solid cutting blade is heated, followed by the heated blade being moved to a cutting position to cut sealed proximal and distal tubes received by the slots. The second carriage moves proximally or distally with respect to the first carriage so as to align the cut ends of the tubes. The heated blade then moves out of the cutting position, followed by the first carriage moving toward the second carriage so as to press the cut ends of the tubes into contact with each other so as to sterilely connect the cut ends and define a joined tube.

A welding knife is moved between the first and the second tube holder and severs the tubes in the process. Cut ends and residual ends are thereby produced. The cut ends are aligned with one another by a relative movement of one tube holder with respect to the other tube holder and, by a horizontal movement of the two tube holders, are welded simultaneously to form continuous tubes.
