The present invention relates to systems and methods that allow one or more users to actively and interactively play games. The invention combines active game play with virtual reality game play to provide a new and improved experience to players. Players can compete against each other by using a variety of targets and computerized scoring. The invention can track when an object or target is struck or comes in proximity of another object or target. Advantageously, the invention can be used by players of a wide range of ages, skill levels, and physical abilities.

The present invention provides a gaming device for playing a game of laser tag. The gaming device includes a controller configured to control and coordinate functions between various components thereof. The gaming device includes an aiming unit configured to generate infrared light signals and a receiver configured to detect the generated infrared light signals. The gaming device includes a targeting unit configured to generate a vibration when the receiver in the targeting unit detects infrared light signals. The gaming device further includes one or more lights configured to indicate one or more states of the aiming unit and targeting unit. The controller is configured to engage the aiming unit and targeting unit in a stealth mode in which the one or more lights are switched off.

A gaming system may include: an infrared signal emitter configured to emit an infrared signal, the infrared emitter being configured to emit a predetermined number of emissions per a simulated reloading action, the infrared signal being configurable to be associated with one of at least a first team, a second team, and a neutral team, the infrared signal emitter including a handle to be grasped by a player and a trigger to effect emission of the infrared signal; and an infrared signal receiver configured to receive the infrared signal associated with one of the at least the first team, the second team, and the neutral team. Optionally, the gaming system may include a stationary receiver and emitter for integrated use with game players in a further modification of the methods and uses herein. The stationary receiver and emitter may receive and transmit signals, store a memory of activities, teams, players, and other game-playing benefits.

The system also includes a shooter/target location resolution module for identifying a valid target and a target image recognition module for determining an impact location where a virtual bullet from the shooting firearm would impact within the captured image and determining if an identified target from the captured image is a hit or a miss.

The target face displays a game board (such as a dart board) and allows laser light to pass through. A plurality of light sensors are behind the target face. When a designated portion of the target face is struck by a laser light, a sensor records the strike. One or more of: the game to be played using the target, the number of players, starting the game, resetting the target for a new game, and changing players, is accomplished remotely by striking an area on the target with laser light.
