A high-efficiency filter press includes a filter plate for solid-liquid separation, a material pool for storing materials and transporting the materials to the filter plate, and a filtrate pool for storing filtrate flowing out of the filter plate, wherein the filter plate is provided with a feed hole, a first drain hole and a second drain hole, the material pool is in communication with the feed hole through a feed pipe, the first drain hole is in communication with the filtrate pool through a first drain pipe, the second drain hole is in communication with the filtrate pool through a second drain pipe. The present invention provides a system and methods for filtering fluid using filter papers, stationary paper, cloth sheets or any other porous material. In one embodiment, the present invention uses the lateral flow direction along the porous sheets, instead of conventional vertical flow direction, for the removal of bacteria and particle contamination in the range from nanometers to millimeters. The pore sizes in the filter media along the lateral direction are modulated by controlling the compression of the porous sheets, instead of conventionally designing filters with different pore sizes. The lateral flow fluid filter system is scalable simply by increasing the feed area, feed length, and the number of porous sheets. A grid and a vat for a vat assembly of a vertical filter press such as a tower press is disclosed. The grid is provided with a topographical pattern engaging with a corresponding, inverse topographical pattern on the filtrate vat. The topographical patterns guide the filtrate flow towards a filtrate outlet and reduces the formation of vortices and turbulent flow of the filtrate, hence increasing the filtrate flow rate through the vat. Simultaneous, the topographical patterns improve secure attachment of the grid onto the vat, thereby allowing increased travel speed of the filter medium during advancement thereof. As a result, the cycle time of a filtration process may be reduced, and consequently, the overall capacity of the associated filter press is increased.
