The present invention relates to a composite semipermeable membrane including: a support membrane including a base and a porous support layer; and a separation functional layer disposed on the porous support layer and including a crosslinked aromatic polyamide, in which the separation functional layer contains sulfo groups in an amount of 7.0×10.sup.−5 to 5.0×10.sup.−2 g/m.sup.2 and includes a structure represented by the formula 1.

The disclosure provides a method for producing a gas separation article, said gas separation article comprising: a gas separation membrane, optionally a support, and optionally an additional support said method comprising the steps of: a) providing a matrix comprising: a matrix material having a viscosity from 1 cP to 40000 cP, particles, said particles being free from functionalized carbon nanotubes, and optionally a solvent, b) contacting the matrix of step a) with a support comprising at least one side, said at least one side facing said matrix, thereby forming (i) a matrix side in contact with the support and (ii) a matrix side opposite the side in contact with the support, c) optionally contacting the matrix side opposite the side contacting the support with an additional support, d) subjecting said matrix being in contact with said support to one or more electric fields whereby the particles form particle groups in a plurality of substantially parallel planes, said particle groups in each of said plurality of substantially parallel planes being aligned substantially parallel with the one or more electric fields, e) fixating the matrix material so as to fixate the particle groups thereby forming a gas separation membrane, and f) optionally removing the support and/or the additional support.

The disclosure also provides a gas separation membrane obtainable by the aforementioned method as well as use thereof for separation of gases in a gas mixture.

A forward osmosis membrane having a low water resistance and an excellent mechanical strength includes a support unit and a selective layer. The support unit includes a plurality of nanostructures, and has opposite first and second surfaces which are defined by the nanostructures. Each of the nanostructures includes a carbon nanotube and a hydrophilic film coated around the carbon nanotube. The hydrophilic film includes a first hydrophilic polymeric material and a second hydrophilic polymeric material. The second hydrophilic polymeric materials of the nanostructures are cross-linked. The selective layer covers and contacts the first surface of the support unit.

Stabilized surfactant-based membranes and methods of manufacture thereof. Membranes comprising a stabilized surfactant mesostructure on a porous support may be used for various separations, including reverse osmosis and forward osmosis. The membranes are stabilized after evaporation of solvents; in some embodiments no removal of the surfactant is required. The surfactant solution may or may not comprise a hydrophilic compound such as an acid or base. The surface of the porous support is preferably modified prior to formation of the stabilized surfactant mesostructure. The membrane is sufficiently stable to be utilized in commercial separations devices such as spiral wound modules. Also a stabilized surfactant mesostructure coating for a porous material and filters made therefrom. The coating can simultaneously improve both the permeability and the filtration characteristics of the porous material.

One aspect of the present invention provides a method of manufacturing a separator including: (a) obtaining a laminate by laminating a first porous support and a second porous support; (b) forming a functional layer by applying a composition including a binder and a solvent on both sides of the laminate and drying the composition; and (c) dividing the laminate into two separators along an interface formed by the lamination, and a separator manufactured using the method.
