Apparatus and method for continuous solvothermal synthesis of nanoparticles

An apparatus and a method for continuous solvothermal synthesis of nanoparticles, are provided. The apparatus includes an inlet section, a reactor section, a flexible quenching unit, and an outlet section. The inlet section separately receives reactants including the solvent and a precursor solution that are allowed to flow into the reactor section. The reactor section includes multiple spiral turns such that each of the spiral turns includes a helical channel followed by a counter-helical channel for enabling mixing of the reactants to cause solvothermal reactions between them. The counter-helical channel changes the direction of flow of reactants upon flow of said reactants from the helical channel to the counter-helical channel. The flexible quenching section enclosing a portion of the reactor section quenches a slurry formed as a result of the solvothermal reactions, wherein the slurry includes the nanoparticles of targeted characteristics. The outlet section facilitates withdrawal of the slurry.

The present invention provides a highly effective method of continuous reactions in a heat exchanger reactor using a flexible turbulator (2). The flexible turbulator (2) present in the tube of the reactor assembly provides efficient mixing and reaction of the reactants in the reactor. The tube and shell assembly provides better heat transfer by transfer of heat through the temperature gradient across the tube (3) wall. The shell fluid (8) can be cold or hot as required depending on whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic. The reactants are passed through the inlet (6) and allowed to mix and react in the tube (3), the mixing and reaction is facilitated by flexible turbulator and the final product is received through the outlet. The process can be repeated to achieve desired final product. Progress of the reaction is measured by thermal sensors present inside the reactor. The data is processed through a highly specialized computer software and output about progress of reaction is monitored.

It is provided a process for producing an ethylene copolymer comprising compressing ethylene monomer at a certain pressure; adding a fresh comonomer in liquid form and, optionally, a fresh modifier in liquid form at a certain pressure to the compressed ethylene monomer; introducing the resulting compressed mixture into an autoclave reactor having a first reaction zone and at least one more reaction zone, the first reaction zone having a volume that is greater than 50% of the total reactor volume, and, optionally, at least one additional reactor; adding at least one free radical initiator in order to start a polymerization reaction; and separating the ethylene copolymer from the reaction mixture; wherein all the compressed ethylene monomer or the compressed mixture are introduced into the first reaction zone of the autoclave reactor, and wherein the compressed mixture is introduced into the autoclave reactor and, optionally, into the at least one additional reactor at a temperature from −20° C. to 70° C.

Methods and systems for the controlled production of aqueous halogen solutions with varying compositions are disclosed. According to an embodiment, aqueous solutions of hypochlorite ions are modified through the sequential addition of pH adjusting chemicals, non-chloride halide ions, and halogen stabilizing compounds. Sensors, for measuring physical and chemical properties of the solutions as they change due to the impact of the various chemical reactions, are linked to a control system which, in turn, can control the input of one or more chemicals. The control system facilitates the production of a solution with desired characteristics in terms of pH, specific halogen composition, degree of halogen stabilization, and limiting the production of undesired by products such as bromate ions.
