WATER SOFTENER SYSTEM AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME
A water softener system includes a brine tank, an ion-exchange resin and a softener control valve fluidly coupling the brine tank and the ion-exchange resin. The softener control valve has an inlet configured to receive a flow of feed-water and an outlet configured to deliver a flow of product water. A flow meter is configured to monitor a flow rate of water to or from the control valve, and a sensor is arranged upstream of the inlet of the softener control valve to measure a fluid property of the flow of feed-water. A controller is configured to calculate an available exchange capacity of the ion-exchange resin using flow rate data from the flow meter and a hardness value of the feed-water, which the controller calculates using a fluid property value from the sensor and a predetermined coefficient. The controller is also configured to initiate a regeneration of the ion-exchange resin using the brine tank and the softener control valve, and to update the predetermined coefficient based at least partially on the calculated available exchange capacity upon initiating the regeneration.

METHOD FOR PURIFYING A TARGET SUBSTANCE WITH VIRAL INACTIVATION
The invention relates to a method for purifying a target substance starting from a fluid to be treated which comprises at least one impurity. The method comprises treatment of a stream of the fluid to be treated using a chromatography step in a first separation unit, collection of a fraction enriched with the target substance in a first tank, and viral inactivation of the fraction enriched with the target substance. The viral inactivation comprises passing the fraction enriched with the target substance through a second separation unit, passing a viral inactivation solution through the second separation unit, mixing, and collecting the mixture in the second tank to obtain a fraction depleted of active virus. The method further comprises treatment of the fraction depleted of active virus using a chromatography step in the second separation unit and collection of a fraction more enriched with the target substance.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR REGENERATING AND RESTORING KINETIC PROPERTIES OF RESIN
A system and method configured to restore ion exchange kinetic properties and purify resin is described. Degraded ion exchange kinetic properties of anion resin will eventually result in impurity slippage through resin charges. This system and method employs an acid catalyst in combination with sulfite cleaning solution to remove organic material and to protonate iron oxides for deconstruction and removal from anion resins. The cleaning solution, when applied via a cleaning vessel utilizing an eductor(s)/plenum and wedge-wire screen draw chamber, while controlling all phases of cleaning by electronic monitoring, yields complete restoration of ion exchange kinetics on usable resin. As such, the system and method provides a safe, effective, and vastly improved method for restoring anion resin kinetics and improving regeneration quality, for improved resin performance and minimizing resin replacement costs.
