Shaped cutting tool and method of use to efficiently form a finished part

A method of efficiently forming a finished part, the method includes providing a cutting tool having a first cutting edge extending from a first end of the cutting tool, a second cutting edge extending from a second end of the cutting tool, and a shaping edge disposed between the first cutting edge and the second cutting edge. The cutting tool is advanced into a rotating workpiece such that the first cutting edge removes a trailing end of the rotating workpiece, the shaping edge shapes a working portion of the rotating workpiece, and the second cutting edge removes the working portion of the rotating workpiece to form the finished part.

Described herein is a first method of forming a hole in a workpiece, having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The method includes forming a first hole, having a first diameter, in the workpiece by passing a first cutter through the workpiece from the first surface to the second surface. Additionally, the method includes forming a chamfer in the second surface of the workpiece concentric with the first hole using a second cutter. The chamfer has a second diameter larger than the first diameter. The method further includes forming a second hole, having a third diameter larger than the first diameter, in the workpiece concentric with the first hole by passing a third cutter through the workpiece from the first surface to the second surface.

SWISS TURNING INSERT WITH CHIP FORMER ARRANGEMENT COMPRISING UPWARDLY EXTENDING RIDGE

A swiss insert includes a chip former arrangement. The chip former arrangement includes a ridge separated on each side from a cutting edge's sub-edge by a chip surface. In a side view, each sub-edge extends in a straight line.

Method to machine a metal work piece by turning

A method to form a surface on a metal work piece includes providing a turning insert that has a nose angle formed between first and second cutting edges less than or equal to 85°; providing a turning tool having a tool body with an insert seat in which the turning insert is mountable; arranging the orientation of the second cutting edge such that it forms a back clearance angle of more than 90° in a feed direction; rotating the metal work piece around a rotational axis in a first direction; moving the turning insert in a direction parallel to or at an angle less than 45° relative to the rotational axis; and setting the longitudinal axis of the tool body at an angle greater than zero but less than or equal to 90° relative to the rotational axis of the metal work piece.

Threading insert having variable edge roundness

A threading insert includes a top surface, an opposite bottom surface, a side surface connecting the top surface and the bottom surface, and a first tooth. The first tooth has a first cutting edge, the first cutting edge including a first top cutting edge connecting a first leading cutting edge and a first trailing cutting edge. The first cutting edge has an edge roundness and the size of the edge roundness varies along the first cutting edge.

Shaped cutting tool

A cutting tool for forming a finished part from a rotating workpiece includes a first cutting edge extending from a first end of the cutting tool, a second cutting edge extending from a second end of the cutting tool, and a shaping edge disposed between the first cutting edge and the second cutting edge. The first cutting edge is operable to remove a trailing end of the rotating workpiece and the second cutting edge is operable to remove a working portion of the rotating workpiece disposed between the trailing end and a leading end. The shaping edge is operable to shape the working portion of the rotating workpiece by advancing the cutting tool into the rotating workpiece until the first cutting edge removes the trailing end of the rotating workpiece and the second cutting edge removes the working portion of the rotating workpiece to form the finished part.
