A tap holder includes: a body having a collet holder hole having an opening toward distal end; a tap collet received in the collet holder hole, the tap collet having a tap mounting hole located at a distal end portion, and a sleeve hole located at a basal end portion; a torque transmission mechanism that transmits rotation of the body to the tap collet; a first elastic body disposed between the body and the tap collet to urge the tap collet toward distal end; a sleeve disposed to the body by received in the sleeve hole to prevent the tap collet from slipping off toward distal end; and a second elastic body disposed between the sleeve and the tap collet to urge the tap collet toward basal end.

A gripping assembly includes a spring having first and second legs, a first jaw mounted to the first leg, and a second jaw mounted to the second leg. Each jaw has a tapered outer wall and an inner wall with the inner walls of the jaws facing each other. A sleeve has an internally threaded bore threadably received on the externally threaded portion of the body, and an inner tapered surface configured to abut the tapered outer walls of the first and second jaws. As the sleeve is rotated relative to the body, a distance between the first and second gripping surfaces may be adjusted for gripping a tap between the inner walls of the first and second jaws. Each of the inner walls includes first and second gripping surfaces, the first gripping surfaces defining a first width therebetween for gripping taps having a first range of head sizes, and the second gripping surfaces defining a larger second width therebetween for gripping taps having a second, different range of head sizes.

A tapping head configured to hold and drive different size taps with a slip joint that introduces a small amount of play bet ween the tap head and the tap to compensate for excessive lead that may damage the tap or the workpiece. The tapping head includes a base, a drive coupler, a drive sleeve, a driver, a clutch pack, a pressure ring, a clutch cover, a drive cover and a lock nut. The driver and drive sleeve are longitudinally coupled by splines that form a slip joint. The clutch pact includes discs that against the inside surface of the base and lower surface of the pressure ring. Mounted on the lower surface of the pressure ring are a plurality of clutch springs that force the pressure ring upward against the clutch pack. Disposed between the drive couple and the driver are thrust springs that exert downward forces on the driver. The clutch cover includes internal threads configured to attach to external threads formed on the base. By tightening the clutch cover on the base, the force exerted by the thrust springs on the pressure ring can be adjusted to change the amount of frictional forces exerted by the clutch pack.
