A milling cutting insert has a substantially triangular shape. The cutting insert contains a top side, an underside, and circumferential side surfaces extending between the top side and the underside. Cutting edges are formed at the transition of the circumferential side surfaces to the top side and/or the underside. On the circumferential side surfaces at least two discrete planar abutment surfaces are formed for positioning the cutting insert in a tool holder. The at least two discrete planar abutment surfaces are inclined with respect to each other at an outer angle of between 190° and 220° and the abutment surfaces are spaced from each other with respect to the circumferential direction of the cutting insert.

An indexable cutting insert has opposing upper and lower end surfaces, and a peripheral surface including three side surfaces and three corner surfaces. Each corner surface intersects the upper end surface to form an upper cutting edge, and each side surface has a locating surface. The lower end surface has three radially outward facing lower abutment surfaces. The three locating surfaces define a first imaginary triangle having three first bisector planes and three locating planes, and the three lower abutment surfaces define a second imaginary triangle having three second bisector planes. None of the first and second bisector planes are coplanar, and each locating plane intersects two of the upper cutting edges. For each index position of the cutting insert in an insert receiving pocket of a cutting tool, one of the locating surfaces and one of the lower abutment surfaces is in contact with pocket walls thereof.

A cutting insert includes a top face and a bottom face parallel to the top face. Four side faces and four corner faces extend between the top and bottom faces. At least one cutting edge is formed at an intersection of the top face and at least one of the corner faces and two of the side faces connected to the corner face. The top face forms a rake surface, while an upper part of the corner face and the two side faces form a relief surface connected to the cutting edge. In order to reduce the cycle time for crank shaft milling, the cutting insert has two diagonally opposed corners including an acute angle between 70° and 85°. At least one of the acute angled corners including the corner face providing a corner cutting edge. A disc milling tool including such cutting inserts is also provided.
