The cutout portion includes a recessed portion.

Rotary cutting tool with hybrid cutting insert design

A rotary cutting tool includes a cutting head having a plurality of insert-receiving pockets for radially mounting a first type of cutting insert in a first cutting region and for tangentially mounting a second type of cutting insert in a second cutting region. The first cutting region has a first length, L1, and the second cutting region has a second length, L2, that is greater in magnitude than the first length, L1. The two types of cutting inserts provides a hybrid cutting insert design in which the first type of cutting inserts provide an increased chip gash volume for effective chip evacuation, and the second type of cutting inserts provide an increased core diameter to minimize deflection of the rotary cutting tool.

Whirling tool

A whirling tool configured to machine a workpiece. The whirling tool includes a plurality of cutting inserts, a cutting insert carrier, and a coolant channel which is arranged in the cutting insert carrier. The cutting insert carrier includes a plurality of cutting insert receptacles for receiving and releasably fastening respectively one of the cutting inserts. The cutting insert receptacles are arranged distributed in the circumferential direction over the cutting insert carrier. The cutting insert carrier further includes a through-opening which extends along a central axis of the cutting insert carrier, and through which the workpiece can be passed during the machining. The cutting inserts protrude into the through-opening, and the coolant channel extends between an inlet opening and an outlet opening, wherein the outlet opening leads into the through-opening and/or is oriented towards the through-opening.

The first cutting insert is attached to a first pocket. The second cutting insert is attached to a second pocket. The third cutting insert is attached to a third pocket. The first pocket has a first seat surface, a second seat surface, a third seat surface, and a first swarf discharging groove. The second pocket has a fourth seat surface, a fifth seat surface, a sixth seat surface, and a second swarf discharging groove. The third pocket has a seventh seat surface, an eighth seat surface, a ninth seat surface, and a third swarf discharging groove. In a cross section perpendicular to an axis, an angle formed between a straight line along the sixth seat surface and a tangent of the second swarf discharging groove at a boundary between the outer circumferential surface and the second swarf discharging groove is more than 90°.

Provided is a cutting insert which is resistant to breakage and can stably be restrained. A cutting insert configured as a vertically mounted insert has a first rake face adjacent to a first major cutting edge, a second rake face adjacent to a second major cutting edge, a restraint surface located further inward than the first and second rake faces to come into contact with a tool body when a second end surface is used, and a reinforcing portion projecting from the restraint surface. The reinforcing portion has a third projecting ridge provided to extend between the first and second rake faces and halve the restraint surface, a first projecting ridge connected to one end of the third projecting ridge to extend so as to cover at least a portion of a boundary between the first rake face and the restraint surface, and a second projecting ridge connected to another end of the third projecting ridge so as to cover at least a portion of a boundary between the second rake face and the restraint surface.

Indexable tangential railway wheel milling inserts and cutting tool holders

Railway wheel milling tool system including a railway wheel truing cutters and tangential railway wheel milling inserts are disclosed. The tangential milling inserts have at least four indexable cutting edges, each with a central wiper cutting edge segment between two convex cutting edge segments. The milling inserts may allow both the flat portion and curved portion of a railway wheel to be machined with an improved surface finish. The railway wheel truing cutters comprise a plurality of insert pockets structured and arranged to receive the tangential railway wheel milling inserts.

An indexable tangential cutting insert (4) for a milling tool comprises two opposing side surfaces (13) and four identical lateral surfaces (16, 17) extending between the side surfaces. Each lateral surface of the insert is provided with a support surface (32) configured to be supported by on one hand a corresponding support face of a pocket (3) of a tool body providing an axial support to the insert in two of eight index positions and on the other a corresponding support face of the pocket providing a tangential support to the insert in two other of said eight index positions. Each lateral surface (16, 17) of the insert is provided with a single said second support surface (32) being concave as seen in a direction perpendicular to said side surfaces and extending diagonally across the lateral surface.

In an embodiment, a cutting insert includes a body member and a cutting member. The body member is a columnar body, and includes: an upper surface; a lower surface; and an outer side surface between the upper surface and the lower surface. The cutting member is located at a corner part of the outer side surface in the body member. The cutting member includes: at least three surfaces being exposed; and a cutting edge at an intersecting portion of two of the at least three surfaces. The body member includes a through hole penetrating through the upper surface and the lower surface.

Cutting tool for face milling composite material, corresponding method of face milling, cutting insert and tool body

A cutting tool for face milling includes insert pockets for the fixing of cutting insert. The cutting inserts can be fixed in the insert pockets, wherein the cutting inserts and insert pockets are designed such that, when the cutting inserts are fixed within the corresponding insert pocket, each cutting insert presents: a primary and a secondary cutting edge. The intersection between the primary and the secondary cutting edge of one cutting insert being axially inwardly and radially outwardly offset from the intersection between the primary and the secondary cutting edge of another cutting insert. A lead angle defined between the primary and the secondary cutting edges is less than 30°.

Cutting insert and indexable rotary cutting tool

A cutting insert includes a cutting edge having an involute-curve approximate shape. A cutting edge is formed so as to wholly take on a first curved shape with a first curvature radius when the cutting insert is viewed from the end surface, and is formed so that a large part of the cutting edge takes on a second curved shape with a second curvature radius when the cutting insert is viewed from the side surface.
