MILLING CUTTER
20180001399 · 2018-01-04 ·

A milling cutting insert has a substantially triangular shape. The cutting insert contains a top side, an underside, and circumferential side surfaces extending between the top side and the underside. Cutting edges are formed at the transition of the circumferential side surfaces to the top side and/or the underside. On the circumferential side surfaces at least two discrete planar abutment surfaces are formed for positioning the cutting insert in a tool holder. The at least two discrete planar abutment surfaces are inclined with respect to each other at an outer angle of between 190° and 220° and the abutment surfaces are spaced from each other with respect to the circumferential direction of the cutting insert.

A cutting insert adaptor for an insert pocket can include one or more pairs of opposing insert abutment surfaces and pocket abutment surfaces which converge at an acute angle. The one or more insert abutment surfaces are all rotated in the same direction, relative to their paired pocket abutment surface which in turn rotates a cutting insert abutting the cutting insert adaptor relative to an orientation the cutting insert would have if it only abutted the insert pocket instead of the cutting insert adaptor.

A cutting insert has: an upper surface; a lower surface; a side surface, having a first surface and a second surface disposed opposite each other between the upper surface and the lower surface; and a first cutting edge. The lower surface has a plurality of slots extending from a side of the first surface to a side of the second surface. In addition, when viewed from a side of the lower surface, if the angle between a ridge line on which the upper surface and the first surface intersect and an imaginary extension line of the plurality of slots is defined as θ1, and the angle between a ridge line on which the lower surface and the first surface intersect and the imaginary extension line is defined as θ2, then θ2>θ1.

The first cutting insert is attached to a first pocket. The second cutting insert is attached to a second pocket. The third cutting insert is attached to a third pocket. The first pocket has a first seat surface, a second seat surface, a third seat surface, and a first swarf discharging groove. The second pocket has a fourth seat surface, a fifth seat surface, a sixth seat surface, and a second swarf discharging groove. The third pocket has a seventh seat surface, an eighth seat surface, a ninth seat surface, and a third swarf discharging groove. In a cross section perpendicular to an axis, an angle formed between a straight line along the sixth seat surface and a tangent of the second swarf discharging groove at a boundary between the outer circumferential surface and the second swarf discharging groove is more than 90°.

A cutting insert is provided, comprising a top surface, a bottom surface, a plurality of side surfaces spanning therebetween, and a cutting edge formed at an intersection of the side surface and a forwardly-disposed portion of the top the surface. It further comprises a cooling cavity projecting into the insert, a top end thereof being disposed further forwardly than an open bottom end thereof. The cooling cavity defines at least one molding axis such that a solid element having the shape of the cooling cavity and completely inserted therein may be retracted intact therefrom along a linear path parallel to the molding axis. A circumscribing portion is formed on the side surfaces encircling the cutting insert. The circumscribing portion is formed parallel to the molding axis and has a non-zero height along its entire extent. The cutting insert does not extend beyond the circumscribing portion.

In a cutting tool rotatable about a tool axis, a reversible cutting insert is removably secured in a tool body. The cutting insert has opposing top and bottom end surfaces interconnected by a peripheral surface, and a median plane located therebetween. The peripheral surface includes four side surfaces alternating with four corner surfaces, the side and corner surfaces intersecting the top surface to form top major cutting edges and top corner cutting edges, respectively. Each side surface has a median surface and a top major relief surface. Each top major relief surface forms an acute internal top major relief angle with the median plane, and the median plane intersects the four median surfaces to define an imaginary median square. In a top end view of the cutting insert, the four top major cutting edges define an imaginary top major square rotationally offset from the imaginary median square.

A cutting insert includes an upper surface, a lower surface opposite to the upper surface, a first side surface and a second side surface configured to connect the upper surface and the lower surface, a mounting hole formed to penetrate the upper surface and the lower surface, a first cutting edge formed at an edge of the upper surface that meets the first side surface, and a second cutting edge formed at an edge of the upper surface that meets the second side surface. The lower surface includes a ridge portion, and a first inclined surface and a second inclined surface positioned on both sides of the ridge portion as a boundary. When looking at the lower surface, the first inclined surface and the second inclined surface have asymmetric shapes with respect to the ridge portion.

Tool holder with pocket for accommodating cutting inserts with different clearance angles

A toolholder (10) has a pocket (20) that accommodates two styles of cutting inserts (25, 25′) having different clearance angles (CA). A support pad (78, 80) protrudes from two side walls (82, 84) of the pocket (20). Each support pad (78, 80) includes a first, planar wall (78a, 80a) and a second, planar wall (78b, 80b) formed at a composite angle defined by a first angle (92) and a second angle (94). The first, planar wall (78a, 80a) enables the pocket (20) to accommodate the second style of cutting insert (25′), and the second, planar wall (78b, 80b) enables the pocket (20) to accommodate the first style of cutting insert (25). In one aspect, the support pads (78, 80) extend the entire length, L, of the support pad (78, 80). In another aspect, an indentation (112, 114) divides one or both of the support pads (178, 180) into two portions, each portion having two planar walls (178a, 178b, 178c, 178d, 180a, 180b, 180c, 180d).
