Slices are cut from workpieces using a wire saw having a wire array tensioned in a plane between two wire guide rollers each supported between fixed and floating bearings and comprising a chamber and a shell enclosing a core and having guide grooves for wires. During a cut-off operation, a workpiece is fed through the wire array perpendicular to a workpiece axis and the wire array plane. The workpiece is fed through the wire array while simultaneously: changing shell lengths by adjusting chamber temperatures in dependence on a depth of cut and a first correction profile; and moving the workpiece along the workpiece axis in accordance with a second correction profile. The correction profiles are opposed to a shape deviation.

A wire saw 1 according to the invention for an endless saw wire 3 has a housing 6, a wire drive 9, and a wire store 7. The wire drive 9 is for pulling the saw wire 3 in a circulating direction 8. The wire store 7 has a first package 31 of deflection rollers 32 and a second package 33 of deflection rollers 32. The second package 33 is mounted so as to be displaceable with respect to the first package 31 along a direction 14 in order to increase a length of the saw wire 3 stored on the wire store 7. A feed device 38 exerts a feed force on the second package 31 in the direction 14. The wire store 7 is arranged downstream of the wire drive 9 in the circulating direction 8. The wire saw pulls the saw wire 3 in the circulating direction 8, resulting in a tensile stress on the saw wire 3 running into the wire saw 1. By contrast, the saw wire 3 running out of the wire saw 1 is largely without tension. The relative arrangement of wire drive 9 and wire store 7 allows tensioning of the running-out saw wire 3 by the wire store 7.

The defection roller 32 has a running groove 45 for guiding the saw wire 3 of the wire saw 1. The pivot joint 60 has a rotary bearing block with a cylindrical receptacle 65, and a tube 63 which is arranged so as to be rotatable in the cylindrical receptacle, wherein the deflection roller 57 is attached to the one of rotary bearing block 62 or tube 63. A clamp 70 is fastened to the rotary bearing block 62 and arranged so as to enclose the tube 63. A lever 68 can be moved manually between a first position and a second position.

A roller module is used for driving a sawing wire to slice an ingot into multiple wafers, and includes two spaced apart main rollers and an auxiliary roller. Each main roller has a rotating axis and a diameter. An imaginary horizontal plane is defined to pass through the rotating axes of the main rollers. Two imaginary vertical planes are defined to be perpendicular to the imaginary horizontal plane and respectively pass through the rotating axes of the main rollers. The auxiliary roller is disposed above the imaginary horizontal plane and between the imaginary vertical planes. An uppermost side of the auxiliary roller is not lower than an uppermost side of each main roller. The auxiliary roller has a diameter smaller than one half of that of each main roller.

A cutting apparatus and the method of operating same is provided. The apparatus includes a feed tower assembly configured to be attached to an object and a frame base plate movably attached thereto. The frame base plate has a pivotable arm assembly and an arm wheel thereon which accept a cutting member. A visual tension indicator is operably connected to the frame base plate and the arm assembly and configured to indicate an amount of tension applied to the cutting member.
