A method of resistance spot brazing a workpiece stack-up that includes a first thin-gauge steel workpiece and a second thin-gauge steel workpiece. The method includes several steps. A first step involves applying a filler material to a surface of the first thin-gauge steel workpiece. A second step involves bringing a surface of the second thin-gauge steel workpiece to adjoin the filler material. A third step involves clamping a first welding electrode and a second welding electrode on the first and second thin-gauge steel workpieces and over the filler material. A fourth step involves passing electrical current between the first and second welding electrodes and hence through the filler material. And a fifth step involves terminating passage of the electrical current in order to establish a brazed joint between the first and second thin-gauge steel workpieces.

Method of forming a brazed joint having molybdenum material

A method of forming a brazed joint is described. The method includes pressing a non-molybdenum component, such as a cross pin of a battery case assembly, against a molybdenum component, such as a terminal pin of the battery case assembly, and applying one or more electrical pulses to form an interface liquid layer between the components that cools to form the brazed joint. At least one of the electrical pulses has a constant voltage over a pulse time. A contact resistance between the components can decrease during the pulse time, and thus, the constant voltage can cause an uncontrolled electrical current of the electrical pulse to increase. The increasing electrical current heats the components sufficiently to form the interface liquid layer having a predetermined thickness that provides a required bend strength. Removal of surface oxides provide consistent mechanical strength for this joint. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

A method of repairing an airfoil is provided. The method includes providing an airfoil with a damaged section and removing the damaged section by machining or cutting an upper section of the airfoil. A replacement section is configured to mate with an upper surface of the airfoil. A presintered preform is provided to join the airfoil and the replacement sections through a resistance brazing process. The presintered preform is configured to mate with the upper surface of the airfoil and a lower surface of the replacement section and inserted between this upper surface and lower surface, creating a stacked airfoil comprising three mated sections in abutting contact. The stacked airfoil is resistance brazed such that only the braze material of the presintered preform melts and the upper surface of the airfoil and the lower surface of the replacement section remain below the grain boundary temperature of the material of the airfoil.
