A vehicle door beam and related methods of making door beams include a flat-rolled aluminum alloy sheet, where two edges of the sheet that are transverse to the roll direction of the sheet are brought together to form a tube. The two edges are friction stir welded together to form a butt joint along a length of the tube. The tube is arranged, along with other optional components, as a side-impact door beam in a vehicle door, such that the butt joint is facing away from an expected impact direction of the vehicle door.

Method for producing a heat exchanger

A method for producing a heat exchanger having tubes that are each received at a longitudinal end side in an associated header, the tubes and the headers are formed out of aluminium. The method may include soldering the tubes and the headers to one another to form a coolant-conducting channel structure, and cold-forming the heat exchanger following the soldering of the tubes to the headers such that strength is thereby increased.

Laser cutting of electrodes in electrochemical devices

Fabricating a capacitor includes performing an oxide formation operation on a sheet of material. The oxide formation operation forms an anode metal oxide on an anode metal. A thermal compression is performed on the sheet of material after the oxide formation operation is performed. The thermal compression applies thermal energy to the sheet of material while applying pressure to the sheet of material. After the thermal compression, the capacitor is assembled such that at least one electrode in the capacitor includes at least a portion of the sheet of material.

Method for the production of tailor welded blanks (TWBs)

Method for producing a component system having a first component with a first component portion and a second component with a second component portion, including the following steps: connecting, in particular welding or soldering, the first component portion, which consists of an aluminum alloy, to the second component portion, which in particular consists of a naturally aged aluminum alloy, a copper alloy or an iron alloy, in particular a steel alloy, so as to form a connection seam; artificially aging the connection seam such that the yield strength of the connection seam is above the yield strength of the first component portion and/or of the second component portion; and deforming, in particular deep-drawing and/or stretch-drawing, the component system.

In a laser cutting method, a cut slit of a welding protruding-tab configured to be bent by laser cutting along an outline of a processed part and press a peripheral surface of the processed part is laser-cut in advance in a periphery of the processed part that is cut from a workpiece, and an outline slit is formed by performing laser cutting along the outline of the processed part and a free end of the welding protruding-tab is welded to the peripheral surface of the processed part. According to the above described laser cutting method, it is possible to retain the processed part reliably and stably for a long period, and it is possible to easily separate the processed part from the workpiece with almost no trace left on the processed part.

Welding systems and methods with knurled weld interfaces for metallic workpieces

Presented are metalworking systems for joining metallic workpieces, methods for forming and welding such workpieces, and lithium-ion battery pouch cells with anodized aluminum tabs joined via knurling and laser welding. A method for laser welding abutting sections of a workpiece or stackup of workpieces includes receiving, via a workpiece support frame, one or more metallic workpieces each with a surface having applied thereto a treatment layer. This treatment layer releases a gas during welding. A metalworking device forms a knurl pattern into the workpiece surface with the treatment layer. The knurl pattern includes a network of channels, such as one or more series of mutually parallel, rectilinear vent channels, designed to exhaust therethrough the gas released from a welded section of the treatment layer. A laser welding device thereafter welds a joint region of the surface(s) of the one or more metallic workpiece with the knurl pattern.

Joined metal member and manufacturing method therefor

According to an embodiment, a method for manufacturing a joined metal member includes: disposing a first metal member inside a mold of an injection molding apparatus, the first metal member being made of a first metal material, unevenness being formed over a surface of the first metal member, and an oxide film being formed so as to cover the unevenness; and injecting a second metal material into the mold, and thereby molding a second metal member and joining the second metal member to the first metal member, the second metal material being, when it is injected into the mold, in a semi-molten state, or in a molten state in which a difference between a temperature of the second metal material and a liquidus temperature thereof is smaller than or equal to 30° C.

Laser welding methods include focusing laser radiation onto a first metal sheet disposed on a metal part, optionally with one or more intervening metal sheets therebetween. The laser radiation is steered to trace at least one spiral path to spot-weld together the metal parts. The laser radiation includes a center beam and an annular beam to maintain a stable keyhole. One method is tailored to weld aluminum parts, e.g., with high gas content and/or dissimilar compositions, and the laser radiation traces first an outward spiral path and then an inward spiral path. The center beam is pulsed during one segment of the inward spiral path. Another method is tailored to weld steel or copper parts having a coating at an interface therebetween, and the laser radiation traces an inward spiral path. The interface may be a zero-gap interface, or a non-zero gap may exist.

Welding gas compositions and method for use

The present invention relates generally to welding gas compositions used as shielding gases in an electric arc welding process. More particularly, the invention is directed a shielding gas compositions used in gas metal or tungsten metal arc welding processes for welding aluminum or aluminum alloy containing work pieces. The compositions comprise from 200 to less than 400 ppm oxygen; from 200 to less than 400 ppm of a second gas selected from nitrous oxide, nitrogen, and combinations thereof; and the remainder being an inert gas preferably selected from argon, helium, and mixtures thereof.
