MACHINING USING CRYOGENIC COOLING ON A CUTTING TOOL WHILE HEATING A WORK PIECE
The invention improves machining methods by using cryogenic cooling techniques in combination with a heat source to simultaneously cool a cutting tool while heating a work piece to make the work piece more pliable while increasing efficiency and/or longevity of the cutting tool.
Methods of modifying material flow mode during machining and products formed thereby
Methods of inducing segmented flow in a material in which a ductile flow mode would otherwise occur during machining. A monolayer molecular film is formed on a surface of a body of a material in a state such that the material exhibits ductile flow when subjected to shear. The monolayer molecular film has molecules each having a head group adsorbed to the surface, a terminal group, and a hydrocarbon chain therebetween having a chain length of greater than 6. A surface portion of the body is removed by engaging the body with a tool in a contact region below the surface of the body and moving the tool relative to the body to remove the surface portion and the monolayer molecular film thereon. The monolayer molecular film induces segmented flow in the material during the removing of the surface portion.
Method and apparatuses related to hole cutting
A method for hole cutting in a workpiece made of CFRP with a cutting tool including at least one cutting edge is provided. Further, a hole cutting assisting apparatus and an apparatus for hole cutting includes a cutting tool, a drive for rotating the cutting tool, and a heating element configured for heating at least a portion of the cutting edge of the cutting tool.
SYSTEM AND METHOD TO PERFORM DISSIMILAR OPERATIONS IN A SINGLE MACHINE
A spatially coherent machine for manufacturing comprises, in one example, a workpiece holder configured to secure a workpiece, a toolholder with at least one axis of motion control configured to perform a subtractive machining operation on the workpiece using a machining tool, a heating element configured to perform a heating operation on the workpiece, and a forming element configured to perform a forming operation in which force is applied to the workpiece in an amount that causes plastic deformation of the workpiece material. The workpiece holder secures the workpiece during the heating, forming, and subtractive operations such that the forming and subtractive operations are performed in a spatially coherent manner.
Plasma assisted surface finishing apparatus and method
An apparatus for finishing a component includes at least one articulating arm, at least one plasma gun disposed at an end of a first articulating arm of the at least one articulating arm, at least one shot peen nozzle maintained in a fixed positioned relative to the plasma gun, and a controller controllably coupled to the articulating arm such that output signals from the controller control motions of the articulating arm.
DEFORMABLE SLEEVE NUT AND A METHOD OF MANUFACTURING
Disclosed is a method of manufacturing a deformable sleeve nut that includes selectively strain hardening only a first portion of a material blank while not strain hardening a second portion of the material blank, then, after strain hardening the first portion of the material blank, internally threading the first portion of the material blank to define a nut portion and machining the second portion of the material blank to define a deformable sleeve portion that includes an end portion and a bulbing portion positioned between the end portion and the nut portion, where the bulbing portion is constructed to bulb outwardly and form a load bearing flange when the bulbing portion is compressed between the end portion and the nut portion. Also disclosed is a deformable sleeve nut made with this process.
Apparatus and method for laser or plasma cutting of pieces of laminar material wound in coil
A method and apparatus for laser or plasma cutting of pieces from laminar material wound in coil is provided. The apparatus provides a cutting station, with an operative cutting area and a receiving cavity, means for positioning and holding the laminar material suspended in the operative area above the receiving cavity during cutting operations, an electronic control unit and movable device for selective collection of the machined pieces. The electronic control unit controls the movement of the movable device between an active and a passive position so that that the movable device is in passive position when the cutting head is performing cutting operations generating swarf, letting such swarf to fall inside the cavity, and is in active position when the cutting head is performing cutting operations to detach pieces from the laminar material skeleton, to collect the pieces separately from the swarf and the skeleton.
Method for producing at least one component for a hydraulic displacement unit
The present application relates to a method for producing at least one component for a hydraulic displacement unit, wherein the method is characterized by the steps: prefabrication of a blank component for the at least one component, wherein at least one defined surface region of the blank component is fabricated intentionally with oversize, surface-hardening of the blank component, and final forming of the component from the hardened blank component by removal of the excessive material at the at least one defined surface region fabricated with oversize.
