METHODS FOR FORMING COOLING APERTURES IN A TURBINE ENGINE COMPONENT
A manufacturing method is provided during which a preform component for a turbine engine is provided. The preform component includes a substrate. An outer coating is applied over the substrate. A characteristic of the outer coating is determined. Instructions for forming a cooling aperture are revised based on the characteristic of the outer coating to provide revised instructions. The cooling aperture is formed in the outer coating and the substrate based on the revised instructions.
FORMING LINED COOLING APERTURE(S) IN A TURBINE ENGINE COMPONENT
A manufacturing method is provided. During this method, a preform component is provided for a turbine engine. The preform component includes a substrate. A preform meter section and a preform diffuser section are formed in the substrate. An internal coating is applied to at least the preform meter section to provide a meter section of a cooling aperture. External coating material is applied over the substrate. The applying of the external coating material forms an external coating over the substrate. The applying of the external coating also builds up the external coating material within the preform diffuser section to form a diffuser section of the cooling aperture.
MANUFACTURING METHODS FOR MULTI-LOBED COOLING HOLES
A method for producing a diffusion cooling hole extending between a wall having a first wall surface and a second wall surface includes forming a cooling hole inlet at the first wall surface, forming a cooling hole outlet at the second wall surface, forming a metering section downstream from the inlet and forming a multi-lobed diffusing section between the metering section and the outlet. The inlet, outlet, metering section and multi-lobed diffusing section are formed by laser drilling, particle beam machining, fluid jet guided laser machining, mechanical machining, masking and combinations thereof.
DEBRIS REMOVAL
A method for the removal of debris (75) from an aperture (60), the aperture comprising a first aperture diameter (64) and extending along a first axis (62) over a first distance (63), the method comprising the steps of aligning a beam of energy (80) with the first axis such that the beam of energy is coaxially aligned with the aperture, the beam of energy comprising both an energy sufficient to remove the debris, and a first beam diameter (82) which is less than the first aperture diameter; and, exposing the debris to the beam of energy in order to remove the debris from the aperture.
Device and method for analyzing the surface of parts having cooling fluid openings
A method for coating a part having a surface that has cooling fluid openings that adjoin cooling fluid ducts inside the part. A device analyzes the surface of a part having a surface that has cooling fluid openings which adjoin cooling fluid ducts inside the part, the device being usable in the aforementioned method. The disclosed device and/or the disclosed method is used during the manufacturing and/or overhauling of parts of a turbomachine.
Backwall strike braze repair
A process of repairing a component includes identifying a void in a component; determining at least one approximate physical configuration of the void; inserting borescope into the component in order to view the void; providing a repair rod approximately equivalent to at least one of the least one approximate physical configuration of the void; inserting the repair rod into component; confirming insertion of the repair rod in the void; separating the repair rod to leave a repair plug in the void; and depositing braze paste over the repair plug in the void.
Braze method to modify a passage
A process of modifying a passage in a component is provided. The process includes inserting a first material into the passage; blocking at least one end of the passage; inserting an elongated member into the passage through the first material; heat treating the passage, the first material, and the elongated member to form a solid interior in component; and machining through the solid interior to form a modified passage in the component.
ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED OBJECT USING MASK OVER OPENING FOR COATING
An additively manufactured (AM) object may include a body including an opening in an exterior surface thereof, the opening having a shape and a first area at the exterior surface of the body. A mask may be positioned over the opening. The mask has the shape of the opening and a second area that is larger than the first area so as to overhang the exterior surface of the body about the opening. A plurality of support ligaments couple to the mask and the exterior surface of the body at a location adjacent to the opening to support a portion of the mask. A coating can be applied to the object, and the mask removed. The final AM object includes a plurality of ligament elements extending from the exterior surface of the body and through the coating adjacent the opening, each ligament element at least partially surrounded by the coating.
FABRICATION OF COOLING HOLES USING LASER MACHINING AND ULTRASONIC MACHINING
A method of machining cooling holes includes providing a workpiece in which a cooling hole is to be formed. The cooling hole, once formed, defines distinct first and second sections. The workpiece is secured in a fixture that is mounted in a first machine. In the first machine, a laser is used to drill a through-hole in a wall of the workpiece. The through-hole is spatially common to the first and second sections of the cooling hole. After drilling the through-hole, the fixture with the workpiece secured therein is removed from the first machine and mounted in a second machine. In the second machine, ultrasonic machining is used to expand a portion of the through-hole to form the second section. An abrasive slurry used in the process is drained through the through-hole during the ultrasonic machining.
