A tool drive unit for a turning device for machining workpieces has a tool holder driven in a displaceable manner along an infeed direction by a first linear motor and driven in a pendular/displaceable manner in a direction transverse to the infeed direction by a second linear motor. Both linear motors have a moving coil/piezo element. The turning device has a main infeed drive, which produces a primary infeed movement of a turning tool in an infeed direction, and has a main transverse drive which produces a primary transverse movement in a transverse direction transversely to the infeed direction. The turning device has a secondary transverse drive whose movements are oriented in the same direction as the main transverse drive, wherein the turning tool and the axis of rotation can be moved towards one another and away from one another by the superimposition of primary and secondary transverse movements.

A power tool includes a pneumatic motor with an output shaft, a spindle that is drivingly connected to the output shaft via a drive gear to provide a rotational movement to the spindle and via a feed gear to provide a translational movement to the spindle. The retraction gearing includes a retraction torque limiting coupling adapted to be released when an operational torque (T) exceeds a retraction threshold torque (T.sub.R) in order to terminate retraction. A lock mechanism is arranged to selectively block the cylinder in the retraction gearing position through engagement between a tooth of a ratchet on the lock mechanism and a shoulder on the cylinder. The lock mechanism assures that the cylinder is kept in the retraction gearing position during an initial phase of the retraction of the spindle.

A tooling system that includes a drive unit configured to provide rotational force to a tool member. The tool member is attached at a mount on the drive unit. A camera associated with the drive unit is aligned to capture a target on the tool member. The data is sent to a controller that identifies the tool member based on the target. The controller determines whether the tool member is correct for performing an operation on a work piece. If the tool member is correct, the controller may set one or more operating parameters on the drive unit. If the controller determines that the tool member is not correct, the drive unit is disabled. Further, a signal may be sent to inform an operator of the issue.
