In the clutch mode, the elastic member elastically deforms to reduce the release value in response to the change ring operated in the forward rotation direction, and to increase the release value in response to the change ring operated in a backward rotation direction.

A hammer is rotationally and axially movable relative to the anvil for imparting the consecutive rotational impacts upon the anvil. A spring biases the hammer in an axial direction toward the anvil. A battery pack has a nominal voltage of at least 18 Volts and a nominal capacity of at least 5 Ah. The rotary impact tool has an overall weight including the battery pack that is less than or equal to 7.5 pounds. A ratio of the fastening torque to the overall weight is greater than or equal to 120 ft-lbs per pound.

A hammerhead is detachably engageable to the hammerhead engaging portion to allow for quick change of the hammerhead without the need for any tools. The hammerhead may alternately be implemented to engage and apply an impact force to a fastener that may be axially offset from the extender arm body.

Power tool component position sensing

Position sensing related to a component within a power tool. The component within the power tool is, for example, a hammer of an impact mechanism and can include one or more sensible features that allow a controller of the power tool to precisely determine the position, speed, and acceleration of the component. One or more sensors can be used to determine the rotational position of the hammer and the axial position of the hammer. The rotational position of the hammer can then be used to calculate, for example, rotational speed and acceleration of the hammer. With precise determinations of the rotational and axial position of the hammer, the controller of the power tool is able to precisely time the impact between the hammer and the anvil to optimize the impact between the hammer and the anvil (e.g., to maximize energy transfer between the hammer and the anvil).

NOSECONE TO BATTERY CONNECTION IN POWER TOOL

A power tool is provided an electric motor, a nosecone assembly having a metal body, a terminal block that couples to a removable battery pack, and an electronic power module that regulates supply of electric current from the battery pack to the motor. A discharge wire is coupled to the terminal block on a first end and to the metal body of the nosecone assembly on a second end to provide a discharge path from the nosecone directly to the battery pack bypassing the electronic power module.
