A portable crimping device and method of making such a crimping device is disclosed. A portable crimper transfers hydraulic forces back into the hydraulic cylinder and not just into a pinned or fixed connection supporting it. To withstand these forces, the cylinder is milled out of a single piece of source metal and the arm that transfers the forces is joined to the cylinder via pair of flanges extending the entire length of the cylinder to distribute them over a wider surface area.

A hydraulically operated handheld device and a method of operating same are provided. The device includes a hydraulic pump, a moving part, a fixed part and a return valve with an associated valve seat. The moving part is moved into a working position due to the buildup of a hydraulic pressure by filling a hydraulic chamber with hydraulic medium from a reservoir with the aid of the hydraulic pump. The moving part can be automatically moved back from the working position into an end position upon reaching a predefined working pressure by opening the return valve. The hydraulic pressure acting upon the return valve is increased by a separately triggerable pressure increase, which results in opening of the return valve, in a hydraulic medium volume located upstream of the return valve in a flow direction of the hydraulic medium during the movement into the end position.

The system is particularly advantageous for removing one or more studs (28) from the sockets (24) of bell cranks (16) of steering systems of vehicles such as an Off-highway Truck. In a particular arrangement the apparatus (30) comprises a frame member (32) adapted to be attached to a pivot joint (14) for extraction of the stud (28) from the socket (16). Furthermore, the apparatus 30 comprises actuator means (34) adapted to be selectively displaced between an extended condition and a contracted condition for applying a force to the stud (28) so as extract or at least loosen the stud (28) from the socket (36). In a particular arrangement, the actuator (34) comprises a hydraulic actuator. The system is adapted to remotely operate the extraction apparatus (30).
