Methods and systems for 3D printing with a 3D printing platform including printing tool coupling components

Methods and systems for 3D printing use a 3D printing device defined by a polar coordinate frame including an r-axis, a z-axis, and a rotational theta axis. The device includes a base, a rotatably attached printing stage is rotatably attached, a z-axis aligned pair of towers, an r-axis aligned rail slidably coupled to the towers, a print head slidably disposed on the rail, a printing tool coupling component (“master”) joined to the print head, and a rotatable tool carousel with bays housing printing tools, each including a printing tool body (“slave”). The slave may be coupled with and locked to or unlocked from the master to form a coupled tool assembly through a mechanical actuation assembly. With the coupled tool assembly, a printing tool is removable from a respective bay when the coupled tool assembly moves along the r-axis in a direction opposite from the rotatable tool carousel.

Various implementations include a three-dimensional printing device. The device includes a primary extruder, a secondary extruder, and a build plate. The primary extruder has a hollow primary body for accepting a printing material. An end of the primary body defines a primary extruder opening shaped to extrude a primary extrusion of melted printing material. The secondary extruder has a hollow secondary body for accepting a printing material. An end of the secondary body defines a secondary extruder opening shaped to extrude a secondary extrusion of melted printing material. A first primary extrusion extruded from the primary extruder disposed side by side with a second primary extrusion extruded from the primary extruder adjacent the build plate in a first layer defines a gap between adjacent edges of the first and second primary extrusions. A first secondary extrusion extruded from the secondary extruder is disposable in a second layer in the gap.

Recoating Unit, Recoating Method, Device and Method for Additive Manufacturing of a Three-Dimensional Object

A recoating unit (40) serves for equipping or retrofitting a device (1) for additive manufacturing of a three-dimensional object (2) by selectively solidifying a building material (15), preferably a powder, layer by layer. The device (1) comprises a recoater (16) movable across a build area (8) for applying a layer (31b, 32b) of the building material (15) within the build area (8) and a solidification device (20) for selectively solidifying the applied layer (31b, 32b) at positions corresponding to a cross-section of the object (2) to be manufactured. The device (1) is formed and/or controlled to repeat the steps of applying and selectively solidifying until the object (2) is completed. The recoating unit (40) comprises at least two recoating rollers (41, 42) spaced apart from each other in a first direction (B1) and extending into a second direction transversely, preferably perpendicularly, to the first direction, and a compacting and/or smoothing element (45) arranged between the two recoating rollers (41, 42) in the first direction (B1) and extending into the second direction. The recoating unit (40) is adapted to draw-out building material to a regular layer (31a, 32a), depending on the movement of the recoating unit into the first direction (B1) or into its reverse direction (B2), using the recoating roller (41, 42) arranged ahead in the respective moving direction (B1, B2), and to compact or smoothen the layer (31a, 32a) drawn-out by the recoating roller (41, 42) arranged ahead using the compacting and/or smoothing element (45).
