The body is heated in a mould cavity around the field joint to effect thermal expansion of the thermoplastics material. Thermal expansion of the body in the mould cavity is constrained to apply elevated pressure between the body and pipe sections joined at the field joint. The elevated pressure improves bonding and fusing between the body, which forms a field joint coating, and the parent coatings and the exposed pipe sections of the pipe joints. The body need not be fully molten, which reduces the mould residence time including in-mould heating and cooling phases.

After the spigot end is inserted to a given depth, the socket is heated sufficiently so that the internal diameter of the socket end comes into contact with the external diameter of the spigot end, the molecularly oriented pipe being in a rubbery state and exhibiting a low elastic modulus which allows the socket end to conform tightly to the spigot end external diameter without deforming the spigot end.

The method further comprises mechanically connecting the plastics shaped piece to the metal shaped piece in a manner such that the plastics shaped piece and the metal shaped piece are held against one another by intrinsic stress, and such that there is a substantial area of surface-contact between the plastics shaped piece and the metal shaped piece at at least one interface. The method further comprises inductively welding the plastics shaped piece to the metal shaped piece at the at least one interface.
