TENSIONED PRINTING SCREEN FRAME, ASSEMBLY AND METHOD
20230135873 · 2023-05-04 ·

Disclosed is a printing screen assembly, a frame for a printing screen and method for their construction. The printing screen assembly has a frame (310) with an elongate first frame member (320, 320a) and an elongate second frame member (320, 320b) parallel to the first frame member (320, 320a) and in fixed relation thereto; and a corresponding cantilevered first and second tensioning arrangement (326) extending from each frame member (320) along a length thereof. A predictable pre-tensioning force may be applied by resiliently deflecting the tensioning arrangements (326) into contact with an abutment arrangement (328) and securing a printing screen to an attachment portion (326b) of the first tensioning arrangement (326a), while the first tensioning arrangement (326) is in contact with the first abutment arrangement (326a). The frame may be formed by preselecting the resilience of the tensioning arrangement (326) so as to preselect the tension applied when tensioning a printing screen in use.

PHOTOSENSITIVE STENCILS AND METHODS

A photosensitive stencil includes a porous stencil carrier that can be a sheet of woven material with crisscrossing filaments. The stencil carrier is coated with a photopolymer emulsion that is water based to form a stencil blank. In use, a light mask is disposed atop the stencil blank. The light mask can be contained on a sheet of paper or a transparent film. Alternatively the stencil blank is fed through an inkjet printer and the light mask is printed directly onto the stencil blank using common inks. The stencil blank is then exposed to light for a few minutes, which cross-links the photopolymer emulsion in unmasked regions. After exposure, the stencil blank is developed by being washed out with water. The water removes emulsion and adhesive, where present, within areas that were masked by the light mask, revealing open or open regions through which ink or paint can be applied.

DIRECT TO MESH SCREEN STENCIL CREATION

A direct to mesh (DtM) screen printer for creating a screen stencil is provided. The DtM screen printer includes a frame to hold a pre-stretched mesh in place during application of a jettable emulsion, a fixture to hold the frame, a platen to hold a release fluid against one side of the pre-stretched mesh, a fluid dispenser for dispensing the release fluid onto the platen or mesh, and a printer carriage supporting a print head for printing the jettable emulsion on a side of the pre-stretched mesh opposite the platen. A process is also provided, the process being for using the DtM screen printer to prepare the screen stencil for screen printing.
