The invention achieves a method and a device for embossing license plates, in particular motor vehicle license plates, said method and said device being easy to handle and flexible to use. This is achieved in that a handling installation retrieves the embossing die parts required for the respective license plate to be embossed from a magazine and successively places said embossing die parts onto two die holding frames.

The support assembly is operable to be mounted on the lift mechanism so that the lift element is aligned with a lift opening of the support plate, with the lift element shiftable through the lift opening to locate at least part of the graphic arts plate assembly away from the support plate.
