Stitching of multiple images into a composite representation can be performed using a set of stitching parameters determined based, at least in part, upon a subjective stitching quality assessment value. A stitched image can be compared against its constituent images to obtain one or more objective quality metrics. These objective quality metrics can be fed, as input, to a trained classifier, which can infer a subjective quality assessment metric for the stitched (or otherwise composited) image. This subjective quality assessment metric can be used to adjust one or more compositing parameter values in order to provide at least a minimum subjective quality assessment value for composited images.

A method for displaying an environment of a vehicle on a display includes: recording the environment with at least two cameras, each having a different field of view, wherein fields of view of adjacent cameras overlap; creating a panoramic image from at least two images taken by differing cameras, the images being projected into a reference plane for creating the panoramic image; ascertaining depth information pertaining to an object in the environment by triangulation from at least two differing individual images taken by the same camera; and generating an overlay structure as a function of the ascertained depth information, the overlay structure having been uniquely assigned to an imaged object; and, representing the created panoramic image, containing the at least one object, and the at least one generated overlay structure on the display such that the overlay structure is displayed on, and/or adjacent to, the assigned object.

The systems and methods provide an extended view of the area surrounding the driver's vehicle while providing real-time object trajectory for objects and other vehicles that may enter the driver's reactionary zone. The system and methods capture images of the area surrounding the driver's vehicle and create a composite image of that area in real-time and using Augmented Reality (AR) create a 3-D overlay to warn the driver as objects or other vehicles enter the driver's reactionary zone so that a driver can make more informed driving decisions.

The surrounding vehicle display system comprises an object detection device detecting an object in surroundings of a vehicle, an electronic control unit, and a display device. The electronic control unit is configured to generate an object mark based on an output of the object detection device and identify the object mark. The display device displays the surrounding vehicle as a vehicle icon when the object mark is identified as a surrounding vehicle by the electronic control unit. The electronic control unit is configured to determine a position of the vehicle icon with respect to the vehicle on the display device and offset a center position of the vehicle icon from a center position of the object mark identified as the surrounding vehicle based on a predetermined size of the vehicle icon.
