A gasket that prevent leaks around the mating surface where two or more objects meet. The gasket includes a substantially planar horizontal top surface defining a body under the top surface; a substantially planar horizontal bottom surface substantially parallel to the top surface; a substantially planar vertical edge extending between the top surface and the bottom surface to define the height or thickness of the gasket; and a step that is integral with the body and has an “L” shape defined by a substantially planar vertical leg and a substantially planar horizontal leg, the step having a bottom and ending in a substantially planar vertical edge that extends between the bottom surface and the horizontal leg to define the height of the step, with the bottom of the step flush with the bottom surface of the gasket. Also disclosed are processes for manufacturing and a railway car including the gasket.

A hatch cover assembly for a hopper railroad car includes a door configured to move from an open position to a closed position, a running track configured to support the door in the open position, a roller assembly attached to the door and configured to move along the running track, a locking clip configured to engage a leading edge of the door, and an actuator configured to move the door between the open position and the closed position.

A cover apparatus for selectively covering the open top of a container may include a pair of tracks for mounting on the sides of the container, a cover movably mounted on the pair of tracks. The cover may include a pair of cover assemblies movable toward each other to produce a closed condition and movable away from each other to produce an open condition. Each of the cover assemblies may be positionable at an end of the container and have a portion movable toward a center of the open top. A cover movement assembly may be configured to move the cover assemblies on the tracks toward each other into the closed condition and away from each other into the open condition.

Generally disclosed is an adhesively secured seal and related methods for sealing a hopper car hatch without the risk of contaminating the hopper car load with food-grade adhesive and without damaging the hopper car or requiring excessive cleaning when removed. The disclosed seal comprises a piece or sheet of plastic with self-contained food-grade adhesive. Preferably, the plastic is cut to fit the length of the hatch of a rail car and features food-grade adhesive along on its surface its edges. In another embodiment, the apparatus is rolled, like tape, wherein the apparatus is installed over a hatch opening so that the sides of the apparatus containing food-grade adhesive are contacted with the rim and sides of the hatch.
