Systems and methods for recommending a steering angle using visual feedback on a wheel

System, methods, and other embodiments described herein relate to providing visual feedback on a steering apparatus using a pscyhophysical model. In one embodiment, a method includes obtaining a difference between a current angle of a steering apparatus and a recommended angle of the steering apparatus. The method further includes determining an appearance parameter based upon the difference and a psychophysical model, wherein the psychophysical model optimizes a relationship between perceived light and the difference such that a change in the difference produces a proportional change in the perceived light. The method further includes illuminating a region of the steering apparatus with light based upon the appearance parameter.

The turning radius of a differentially steered vehicle towing a trailer is controlled when turning so that its turning radius is greater than a minimum allowable turning radius. The turning radius may be autonomously adjusted using a controller to monitor the instantaneous rotational speed differential between the driven wheels and increase or decrease the relative speed between the wheels when the instantaneous rotational speed differential exceeds a threshold rotational speed differential, indicating a turn which is too tight. Alternately, the turning radius may be controlled by the vehicle's operator, who receives a signal from the controller indicating that the vehicle's turning radius is less than the minimum allowable. The operator may then take action to enlarge the turning radius using manual controls.

When the override operation is detected in the stop state, the automatic steering control device prohibits variation in the actual steering angle due to the automatic steering control, until the vehicle starts moving.

The parameters include lane data and turning angle data. Positions of objects in and around the turn region of the roadway are detected using a sensor system of the vehicle. A map of the turn region is generated based on the lane data, turning angle data and that shows the detected objects using the controller. A turning path for the vehicle for navigating the turn in the turn region that avoids the detected objects is determined using the controller. The map with the turning path is displayed on a display screen in the vehicle.
