Top-down serviceable outboard motors

An outboard motor has a top cowl and a service lid on the top cowl is movable into and between a closed position enclosing the powerhead compartment and an open position providing manual access to the powerhead compartment from above the outboard motor. An engine is in the powerhead compartment, wherein a peripheral gap is defined between the top cowl and the engine. A serviceable engine oil device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position. A serviceable transmission fluid device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position. A serviceable gearcase fluid device is in the peripheral gap and is manually accessible from above the outboard motor when the service lid is in the open position.

Outboard motor

An outboard motor is provided with an upper separator disposed on the lower side of an oil case for storing a lubricating oil of an engine, and an extension case which is separably connected on the lower side of the upper separator. The upper separator has a central exhaust passage through which exhaust gas flows, and a cooling water flow part through which cooling water flows on the outside of the central exhaust passage, the central exhaust passage and the cooling water flow part forming an integrated structure. The exhaust gas and the cooling water are caused to mix in the extension case.

The marine engine assembly includes an engine unit including: an engine unit housing being sealed such that water in which the engine unit housing is immersed is impeded from entering the engine unit housing; an engine in the housing; and an air intake assembly in the engine unit housing which forms a conduit between an exterior of the engine unit housing and the engine, the air intake assembly defining an inlet fluidly communicating with exterior air, the engine unit housing defining at least one aperture aligned with the inlet, the air intake assembly defining at least one outlet fluidly connected with the engine intake, the air intake assembly being sealed such that surrounding fluids within the engine unit housing are impeded from entering the air intake assembly; and a propulsion device operatively connected to the engine.

Outboard motor cowling with cooling water egress system

A marine propulsion device is provided. The device includes an engine, a driveshaft that is caused to rotate by the engine, a cowling system, a gearcase that supports a propulsor for imparting a propulsive force in a body of water, and a cooling water circuit that conveys cooling water that exchanges heat with the engine. The cooling water circuit includes an engine dump hose that extends from a first end to a second end. The first end is coupled to a cooling water outlet of the engine. The cooling water circuit further includes an egress component configured to discharge the cooling water from the device at a discharge angle relative to a vertical axis. The egress component extends through one or more components of the cowling system and is coupled to the second end of the engine dump hose.

An outboard motor includes a drive shaft cover to cover a drive shaft extending downwardly from an engine, a lower unit turnable with respect to the drive shaft cover, and a harness. A lower housing of the lower unit houses a lower portion of the drive shaft and an electrical component. The harness is connected to the electrical component through an upper space provided in the drive shaft cover and through a lower space that communicates with the upper space from below in the lower housing.

The screw mechanism includes a first screw provided in the case and a second screw provided on the gear position setting member and configured to be screwed with the first screw.

The first pump and the second pump are arranged in a distributed manner in the outboard motor.

A first bearing rotatably supporting the outer propeller shaft on the case and configured to receive an axial load acting on the outer propeller shaft in a front direction is provided at an outer peripheral side of the front portion of the outer propeller shaft.

Systems and methods for suspending a lubricant in a marine propulsion device

A system for suspending a lubricant in a marine propulsion device having a gearcase, the gearcase defining a gearset cavity for containing a propeller shaft gearset rotated by a driveshaft. The system includes a pump device configured to pump the lubricant away from the gearset cavity, and a reservoir located away from the gearset cavity and configured to receive the lubricant from the pump device. An input passage conveys the lubricant from the pump device to the reservoir, and an output passage conveys the lubricant from the reservoir to the gearset cavity. The reservoir is configured to retain a portion of the lubricant circulating between the gearset cavity and the reservoir.
