SATELLITE BOOM END EFFECTOR
An orbital satellite has a pair of multi-axis booms including both thrusters for course/attitude adjustment and an end effector for grappling payloads and manipulating other tools and objects. The satellite may launch with a primary payload affixed to a bus and one or more secondary payloads affixed to an ESPA ring. Once in orbit, the end effector may be used to grapple the primary and/or secondary payloads and rearrange them on the bus. In further aspects, the end effector may be used to make bus repairs or take measurements, or hold tools that are used to make bus repairs or take measurements.

Systems and methods are described herein for mounting a thruster onto a vehicle. A thruster mounting structure may comprise a first, second, and third rotational joint, a boom, and thruster pallet, and a thruster attached to the thruster pallet. The first rotational joint may be attached to the vehicle and configured to rotate in a first axis. The first rotational joint may be connected to the boom and configured to pivot the boom about the first axis. The boom may be connected to the second rotational joint, which is connected to the third rotational joint and configured to rotate the third rotational joint in the first axis. The third rotational joint may be connected to the thruster pallet and configured to pivot the thruster pallet in a second axis that is perpendicular to the first axis.
MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL OF SPACECRAFT
A control system for controlling an operation of a spacecraft. A model predictive controller (MPC) produces a solution for controlling thrusters of the spacecraft. The MPC optimizes a cost function over a finite receding horizon using a model of dynamics of the spacecraft effecting a pose of the spacecraft and a model of dynamics of momentum exchange devices of the spacecraft effecting an orientation of the spacecraft. The optimization is subject to hard and soft constraints on angles of thrusts generated by thrusters. Further, the hard constraints require the angles of thrusts in the solution to fall within a predetermined range defined by the hard constraints. The soft constraints penalize the solution for deviation of the angles of thrusts from nominal angles corresponding to a torque-free thrust passing through the center of the mass of the spacecraft. A thruster controller operates the thrusters according to the solution of the MPC.

According to some aspects of the subject disclosure, a spacecraft comprises first and second pluralities of thrusters. The pluralities of thrusters are attached to a spacecraft body by booms configured to move the first plurality of thrusters between stowed and deployed positions. The deployed position of the first plurality of thrusters is farther north than is the stowed position of the first plurality of thrusters. The deployed position of the second plurality of thrusters is farther south than is the stowed position of the second plurality of thrusters. The first plurality of thrusters comprises a first thruster and a second thruster separated from each other in an east-west direction. The second plurality of thrusters comprises a third thruster and a fourth thruster separated from each other in the east-west direction.
