Pierced waveguide thruster

The disclosed propulsion system of a space vehicle and the methods of operating the propulsion system use a microwave energy source to heat propellant in a propellant chamber that pierces and traverses a waveguide carrying the microwave energy. In some implementations, the microwave energy ionizes and further heats the propellant in the propellant chamber. The partially ionized and heated propellant may exit the propellant chamber via a nozzle to generate thrust.

Propulsion system for space vehicles

An electric propulsion module coupled to a spacecraft capable of providing thrust at a level required for multi-burn orbit transfer is disclosed herein. The electric propulsion system includes an electric propulsion thruster, a propellant tank and an energy storage device. In one form the energy storage device is a battery operable to provide sufficient power to maneuver the spacecraft quickly to avoid space debris and/or move to a different orbit through a multi-burn thrust procedure.

MODULATING SATELLITE CAPACITY

Methods, systems, and devices for satellite operations are described. A system for satellite communications may include a payload, a power system, and a thermal management component. The payload may be configured to provide a service with varying levels of capacity based on a demand profile. The payload may consume electrical energy at a peak rate when a level of demand indicated by the demand profile is above a threshold and at a lower, off-peak rate when a level of demand indicated by the demand profile is below a threshold. The peak rate may exceed a rate at which electrical energy is generated by the power system. The thermal management component may process excess thermal energy generated by the payload when the payload operates at the peak rate. Processing the excess thermal energy may include storing thermal energy while the payload operates at the peak rate.

GENERATOR AND METHOD FOR USING SAME

A generator (100) of the present invention has a heat source (101) containing a radioisotope substance precursor that becomes a radioisotope substance by irradiation with a neutron and a controller (108) that controls the irradiation with the neutron.
