The spacecraft is able to be modulated such that the main structure can be coupled/decoupled alternatively to/from the first container or the second container, the first container and the second container are able to be coupled/decoupled to/from one another, and the solar generator can be deployed or retracted.
INTERLOCKING, RECONFIGURABLE, RECONSTITUTABLE, REFORMABLE CELL-BASED SYSTEM WITH NESTED RING STRUCTURES
Cell-based space systems with nested-ring structures that interlock and can change configuration to support a mission are provided. The cells may self-assemble into a larger structure to carry out a mission. Multiple rotatable rings may be included in a cell, with a payload/control section in the center. The rings may provide power and/or data to trams that move about the rails. Trams may interlock with other cells, carry sensors or other devices, etc. Cells may be stowed in a cell stack that is deployable. Such cell-based systems may have various applications in space, on Earth, other celestial bodies, and underwater.
ENERGY SUPPLYING DEVICE FOR SPACECRAFT
A method for coupling an energy supplying device to an energy consuming device in space and to a system including an energy supplying device, an energy consuming device and a mobile assembly unit residing in space. The energy supplying device is operable in space and includes solar panel units to convert received light into electrical energy, first coupling members to couple the solar panel units with each other, and a second coupling member to electrically couple the energy supplying device with the energy consuming device. The energy supplying device is configured to supply electrical energy to the energy consuming device in space. A configuration of the solar panel units is changeable in space according to an operational requirement of the energy consuming device.
Ultralight Photovoltaic Power Generation Tiles
Systems and methods in accordance with various embodiments of the invention provide a photovoltaic concentrator tile for a space-based solar power (SBSP) system including constituent components thereof. In a number of embodiments, the photovoltaic concentrator tile include a one photovoltaic cell, a reflector, a power transmitter and circuitry configured to perform a variety of control functions. Embodiments also provide compactible structures, materials for improving thermal emissivity, and methods and mechanisms for manufacturing and using these components.
GEO-ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD GENERATION
An apparatus comprises both a first side and a second side that is opposite the first side. The apparatus includes a plurality of photovoltaic cells disposed on the first side of the substrate and a plurality of microwave antennas disposed on both the first side of the substrate and the second side of the substrate. In addition, the apparatus comprises at least one photonic integrated circuit operably coupled to the substrate and to at least one of the plurality of photovoltaic cells to thereby receive electrical power therefrom. By one approach, the apparatus can further comprise at least one atomic clock supported by the substrate. By one approach, at least some of the aforementioned plurality of microwave antennas that are disposed on the first side of the substrate can comprise an optically transparent portion that serves as both a protective cover and a focusing lens.
Space vehicle with customizable payload and docking station
A black box space vehicle solution may allow a payload developer to define the mission space and provide mission hardware within a predetermined volume and with predetermined connectivity. Components such as the power module, radios and boards, attitude determination and control system (ADCS), command and data handling (C&DH), etc. may all be provided as part of a stock (i.e., core) space vehicle. The payload provided by the payload developer may be plugged into the space vehicle payload section, tested, and launched without custom development of core space vehicle components by the payload developer. A docking station may facilitate convenient development and testing of the space vehicle while reducing handling thereof.
Systems and Methods for Controlling Supply Voltages of Stacked Power Amplifiers
Many embodiments of the invention include stacked power amplifier configurations that include control circuitry for sensing the operational characteristics of the power amplifiers and adjusting the current drawn by one or more of the power amplifiers to prevent any of the power amplifiers from experiencing over voltage stresses and/or to increase the operational efficiency of the power amplifiers.
Systems and Methods for Performing Shape Estimation Using Sun Sensors in Large-Scale Space-Based Solar Power Stations
A space-based solar power station, a power generating satellite module and/or a method for collecting solar radiation and transmitting power generated using electrical current produced therefrom is provided. Power transmitters can be coordinated as a phased array and the power generated by the phased array is transmitted to one or more power receivers to achieve remote wireless power generation and delivery. In many embodiments, a reference signal is distributed within the space-based solar power station to coordinate the phased array. In several embodiments, determinations of the relative locations of the antennas in the array are generated by an array of sun sensors that estimate the shape of the module to evaluate the phase shift and/or amplitude modulation to apply to the reference signal at each power transmitter.
Mirrors Transparent to Specific Regions of the Electromagnetic Spectrum
Systems and methods in accordance with various embodiments of the invention implement mirrors that are more transparent to specific regions of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g. the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum) relative to conventional metallic mirrors (e.g. mirrors made form aluminum or silver). In one embodiment, a space-based solar power system includes: a photovoltaic material; and a mirror that isrelative to a 10 m thick sheet of aluminummore transparent to at least one of a substantial portion of the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum and a substantial portion of the radio wave region of the electromagnetic spectrum; where the mirror is configured to focus incident visible light onto the photovoltaic material.
