Systems and methods for spacecraft reprovisioning

A reprovisionable spacecraft and reprovisioning subassemblies for mating with a reprovisionable spacecraft are both described. The reprovisionable spacecraft has one or more mechanical, thermal, data, and or electrical mating interfaces for attaching, powering, and communicating with a reprovisioning subassembly, which for one embodiment is a self-contained thruster unit. The self-contained thruster unit preferably comprises a fuel tank, control electronics, and a thruster assembly. Alternately, a reprovisioning subassembly can comprise a fuel tank and control electronics, a fuel tank, or a thruster. Also, a reprovisionable spacecraft may be carried into orbit without reprovisioning subassemblies attached, and then deployed after reprovisioning subassemblies have been attached to their respective mating interfaces. Reprovisioning utilizing a self-contained thruster unit or tank eliminates the large risk associated with refueling satellites in space. Reprovisioning also eliminates the need for a dedicated attached life extension vehicle.

Additive manufacturing on-orbit

A spacecraft includes an additive manufacturing (A/M) subsystem and one or both of a thermal control arrangement and a contamination control arrangement. The A/M subsystem includes an A/M tool, feedstock and a workpiece and is configured to additively manufacture the workpiece using material from the feedstock. The thermal control arrangement is operable, in an on-orbit space environment characterized by near vacuum pressure and near zero-g force, to maintain temperature of at least one of the A/M tool, the feedstock, and the workpiece within respective specified ranges. The contamination control arrangement is operable, in the on-orbit space environment, to control outgassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Omni-directional extensible grasp mechanisms

Omni-directional, extensible grasp mechanisms are disclosed. Such grasp mechanisms may be used as a robotic end effector for docking, grasping, and manipulating space structures, or to interconnect other structures or vehicles. Novel interconnected lattice structures may enable large arrays to be assembled. The grasp mechanisms may be used to create structures from parallel docking linkages. This may enable reconfiguration of multiple docked space vehicles and/or structures without the use of propellant. The grasp mechanisms have the ability to make and break connections multiple times, enabling a nondestructive and reversible docking process.

System and method for vaporizing space debris in space

A system and method for vaporizing space debris in space. The system includes a spacecraft body, a primary solar concentrator mounted to the spacecraft body that collects and focuses solar flux from the sun, and a secondary solar concentrator positioned at a focal point of the primary solar concentrator that refocuses the focused solar flux. A manipulator arm coupled to the spacecraft body grabs the space debris in space and positions it at a location where the refocused solar flux vaporizes the debris. The secondary solar concentrator can be a point-source concentrator, the primary solar concentrator can be a parabolic mirror, a Fresnel lens or a light focusing element or assembly, and the space debris can be a retired spacecraft or launch vehicle upper stage or component.

SERVICING SYSTEMS FOR ON-ORBIT SPACECRAFTS
20220332443 · 2022-10-20 ·

A servicing system for on-orbit spacecrafts is disclosed. The system comprises a servicing or host spacecraft configured to perform on-orbit servicing of client spacecrafts. The servicing spacecraft comprises a dedicated, deployable, boom having capture and docking mechanisms. The capture mechanism comprises one or more electromagnets spaced apart and suspended on a frame that may include means for compensating for any out of plane misalignments during capture. The client spacecraft includes a striker plate that covers an area, nominally larger than the footprint of the capture mechanism, that is sized to accommodate a capture envelope determined by the rendezvous and proximity sensing systems. The electromagnets attract the striker plate to capture the client spacecraft in order to provide on-orbit servicing. The docking system has multiple degrees of freedom that are independent of the capture system; docking is accomplished by mechanically coupling the two spacecrafts together, post capture. During docking, electrical and fluid transfer connections may also be accomplished. The servicing spacecraft further comprises a manipulator arm that may be configured to position/align the captured client spacecraft for docking, thereby permitting a very flexible, larger, capture envelope, and reducing operational complexity.

A servicing system for on-orbit spacecrafts is disclosed. The system comprises a servicing or host spacecraft configured to perform on-orbit servicing of client spacecrafts. The servicing spacecraft comprises a dedicated, deployable, boom having capture and docking mechanisms. The capture mechanism comprises a plurality of capture arms attached to a grounding structure. In one embodiment, the capture arms are kinematically linked and are free to rotate with respect to the grounding structure using a single actuator, thereby synchronizing the rotation of the arms for any angular displacement of the actuator, thus the arms form a circle that is concentric with the boom axis. In a second embodiment, there are two sets of capture arms, with the arms in each set kinematically linked and independently actuated; thus, the two sets cooperatively form different grasping geometries. Further, the docking mechanism is configured to enable the host spacecraft to dock with the client spacecraft. The servicing spacecraft may also be configured to carry a robotic arm and a suite of end-effectors that can be automatically changed out on-orbit. The suite of end-effectors may include one configured with the disclosed capture mechanism, and another may be configured with the disclosed docking mechanism.
