Damper mechanisms are provided in conjunction with housings of various different appliances and are disposed at first positions at which the dampers effectively close off or seal the interior regions of the appliances within which various heated, refrigerated, or frozen environments have been established. Such damper mechanisms can be moved to second positions so as to permit food items to be inserted into, or extracted from, the various housings of the appliances, but will automatically return to their first positions so as to again close off or seal the interior regions of the appliances. In this manner, thermal energy is preserved whereby the appliances are enabled to operate at peak energy efficiency.

A cooler capable of achieving a sufficient temperature gradient between an inside of the cooler and an outside of the cooler such that at least a partial vacuum forms within the cooler may include an enclosure defined by at least one wall and a lid. The lid may form a relatively airtight seal with a wall of the cooler when in a closed position. A vacuum release assembly may be disposed in one of the walls or lid of the cooler, the assembly being capable of reducing a pressure differential between the enclosure and the outside of the cooler.

An intermediate layer is positioned above the first insulating layer. A closure mechanism is secured to a portion of the distal edge. The closure mechanism is movable from a closed position, wherein the lunch tote is a closed container, to an open position, wherein the entire lunch tote is convertible into a serving tray. The lunch tote further includes a pair of handles.

The body, lid, and handle can be made entirely of a compostable, recyclable, and/or biodegradable.

A method of packing a temperature sensitive product utilizes a temperature controlled product shipper that includes a phase change material bladder which can be filled with a preconditioned brined-slurry PCM at the point of packaging. The temperature sensitive product is contained within a product box or master case, which is in turn packed inside an insulated liner and an outer box. The PCM bladder fits between the master case and the insulated liner and is filled with the preconditioned flowable PCM at the point of packing just before closing the box for shipment.

The electronic lock has a transceiver configured to be in operational communication with a smartphone. A heating coil is coupled to the insulated box to raise the temperature within the storage cavity. A cooling system is coupled to the insulated box to lower the temperature within the storage cavity. A power supply is coupled within the insulated box and is in operational communication with the heating coil, the cooling system, and the electronic lock.
