The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for making adjustments to the web converting machinery based upon the measured web caliper. Generally the web caliper is measured without contacting the web and in real time while the web is being conveyed at high rates of speed. The web caliper measuring system may be employed in the web converting system to improve web caliper control and improve winding. The web caliper measurement may be fed back to a calendering system to improve the caliper of web fed into a winding system, or the caliper may be fed forward to the web winding system to improve web tension and winding performance.

A web handling system and method for controlling tension in a web of material is disclosed. For instance, the web handling system is particularly well suited for maintaining web tension within predefined setpoints during temporary interruptions in the process, such as during splicing operations. The web handling system includes an accumulator or festoon that accumulates amounts of the material as the material is being fed downstream. At least one guide roll within the festoon is coupled to a drive device, such as a motor. The system also includes at least one tension sensing device. The drive device accelerates or decelerates the guide roll based upon information obtained from the tension sensing device. In one embodiment, the system further includes an electronic gearing configuration between a roll of material being unwound and the guide roll within the festoon for better synchronization and further minimizing tension swings. The electronic gearing can include a diameter calculator for the roll of material being unwound based on speed feedback of a driven guide roll.

A liquid ejecting device includes a heating unit configured to heat a medium transported in a state where liquid adheres to the medium, and a control unit configured to control the heating unit. The control unit determines whether the medium is wound downstream, in a transport direction, from an area heated by the heating unit. When the control unit determines that the medium is wound, the control unit controls the heating unit at a first heating set temperature, and, when the control unit determines that the medium is not wound, the control unit controls the heating unit at a second heating set temperature that is lower than the first heating set temperature.

The machine element is made to rotate against the counter-pair, a measurement signal (25) is generated between the machine element and the counter-pair with the sensor assembly, and recording a reference cross-directional profile (21) of force or pressure generated. Condition monitoring (38) of vibration with the reference profile is by comparison of current signals with the reference so as to detect periodic variation (39.1, 39.2) in the cross-directional pressure profile, and producing visual information (37) from the analysis for monitoring. The invention also relates to a corresponding system, a rotating machine element for the method or the system, and a computer program product.
