Method to prevent cracks in optical fiber preforms

The present disclosure provides optical fiber preforms formed from core canes having large core-clad ratio, intermediate core-cladding assemblies, and methods for making the preforms and core cladding assemblies. The preforms are made with capped core canes. The capping material has a coefficient of thermal expansion less than the coefficient of thermal expansion of the core cane and more closely matched to or lower than the coefficient of thermal expansion of the surrounding cladding monolith in a cane-in-soot process. Presence of the cap reduces stresses that arise from differential thermal expansion of the core cane and cladding materials and leads to preforms having low defect concentration and low probability of failure during subsequent thermal processing steps.

In one representative embodiment, an optical waveguide comprises a core that extends along a propagation axis and has a refractive index profile that varies angularly about the propagation axis. The optical waveguide can also comprise a cladding disposed about the core and extending along the propagation axis. The refractive index profile of the core can vary angularly along a length of the propagation axis.

Cane-Based Multicore Optical Fiber and Methods of Forming

A method of manufacturing an optical fiber, the method including mounting a glass sleeve in a selective etching apparatus. The sleeve comprising one or more axial through-holes, and the etching apparatus comprising a first end cap with a central aperture disposed therethrough, the first end cap being attached to a first surface of the sleeve. The method further including exposing the sleeve to an acid solution such that a first portion of the first surface is exposed to the acid solution and a second portion of the first surface is not exposed to the acid solution. The first portion being adjacent to the central aperture when the sleeve is mounted in the selective etching apparatus, and the second portion being covered by the first end cap when the sleeve is mounted in the selective etching apparatus.

A method of fabricating an optical fiber, the method including providing a core portion including a doped portion having greater than or equal to 1.6 wt. % of a halide dopant and eliminating seed precursor sites at an exterior surface of the core portion, the seed precursor sites forming seeds in the optical fiber, wherein the eliminating the seed precursor sites includes one or more of: (i) fabricating the core portion by densifying an exterior portion of a silica soot body prior to exposing the silica soot body to the halide dopant, and (ii) exposing the exterior surface of the core portion to a reactive etchant. The method further including forming an optical fiber preform by applying cladding material to the exterior surface of the core portion and drawing the fiber preform into the optical fiber.

Multi-core optical fiber ribbons and methods for making multi-core optical fiber ribbons are described herein. In one embodiment, a multi-core optical fiber ribbon includes at least two core members formed from silica-based glass and oriented in parallel with one another in a single plane. Adjacent core members have a center-to-center spacing ≧15 microns and a cross-talk between adjacent core members is ≦−25 dB. In this embodiment each core member is single-moded with an index of refraction n.sub.c, and a core diameter d.sub.c. In an alternative embodiment, each core member is multi-moded and the center-to-center spacing between adjacent core members is ≧25 microns. A single cladding layer is formed from silica-based glass and surrounds and is in direct contact with the core members. The single cladding layer is substantially rectangular in cross section with a thickness ≦400 microns and an index of refraction n.sub.cl<n.sub.c.

The vacuum-based methods of forming an optical fiber preform include applying a vacuum to a preform assembly. The preform assembly has at least one glass cladding section with one or more axial through holes, with one or more canes respectively residing in the one or more axial through holes. The opposite ends of the at least one glass cladding section are capped to define a substantially sealed internal chamber. A vacuum is applied to the substantially sealed internal chamber to define a vacuum-held preform assembly. The methods also include heating the vacuum-held preform assembly to just above the glass softening point to consolidate the vacuum-held preform to form the cane-based glass preform. An optical fiber is formed by drawing the cane-based glass preform. The same furnace used to consolidate the vacuum-held preform can be used to draw the optical fiber.
