MELTING VITRIFIABLE MATERIAL WITH A BIOMASS-TYPE FUEL
A mixture of biomass and vitrifiable raw material for introducing into a fuel combustion furnace for the melting of a vitrifiable inorganic material, such as glass or rock or a silicate, includes an oleaginous biomass, the use of which reduces the damage to the equipment for metering and transporting the vitrifiable raw material.
SONIC INJECTION FURNACE
A low-NOx end-fired furnace for melting glass equipped with an overhead burner includes an inlet duct for oxidizer, including 15% to 30% of oxygen, in its upstream wall, a duct for receiving the combustion flue gases in its upstream wall, and a sonic injection system including at least one injector for injecting a jet of a gas at a speed at least equal to 80% of the speed of sound, referred to as a sonic injector, opening into the upstream wall or opening into the duct for receiving the combustion flue gases, the sonic injector injecting its gas counter-current to the stream of the combustion flue gases that are heading toward the duct for receiving the combustion flue gases.

METHOD OF PREPARING A MELT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF MAN-MADE MINERAL FIBRES
The invention relates to a method of preparing a mineral melt in a cupola furnace that uses at least one plasma torch to provide heat energy to the furnace. The plasma torch uses nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, or a mixture thereof as the carrier gas. The invention also relates to a cupola furnace for the preparation of the mineral melt, and the use of a plasma torch in a cupola furnace to reduce the amount of NO.sub.x and/or hydrogen in the furnace off-gas.

Process and apparatus for making a mineral melt
The invention relates to a method of making a mineral melt comprising providing a circulating combustion chamber (1) which comprises an upper zone (2), a lower zone (3) and a base zone (4), injecting particulate fuel, particulate mineral material and primary combustion gas which has optionally an oxygen level of at least 25% by volume into the upper zone of the circulating combustion chamber so that the fuel undergoes pyrolysis in the upper zone to produce char, thereby melting the particulate mineral materials to form a mineral melt and generating exhaust gases, injecting secondary combustion gas which has optionally an Oxygen level of at least 25% by volume into the lower zone of the circulating combustion chamber so that the char combusts, thereby completing combustion of the fuel, and separating the mineral melt from the hot exhaust gases so that the hot exhaust gases pass though an outlet in the circulating combustion chamber and the mineral melt collects in the base zone. The melt is optionally fiberized. The invention also relates to apparatus suitable for use in the method.
