PRODUCING HOLES IN GLASS CONTAINERS
A glass container that includes a base defining a hole, and methods of manufacturing and using the glass container, is disclosed. The glass container is manufactured by providing the container and cutting a hole in a wall of the container. The hole may be cut into the wall by any technique in which glass material is separated from the wall including by mechanical shearing, thermal energy, and/or fluid impingement. To use the glass container, a deformable blow-out plug may be inserted into the hole to fluidly seal the hole, a liquid beverage may be introduced into the container, a closure may be coupled to the container to close the container and provide a pressurizable package, and thereafter the package may be internally pressurized by introducing a pressurizing gas into the package.
Device for press-cutting glass, method for press-cutting glass, and glass-cutting system
A device for press-cutting glass, a method for press-cutting glass, and a glass-cutting system having the device for press-cutting glass. The device for press-cutting glass comprises a supporting member, having a first supporting portion and a second supporting portion for supporting a glass substrate, which are arranged in a spaced apart manner in a first direction; and a press-cutting member for press-cutting an edge of the glass substrate, which is positioned between the first supporting portion and the second supporting portion in the first direction. The device for press-cutting glass has advantages including high press-cutting efficiency, simple structure, low manufacturing cost, and easy assembling with other devices.
METHOD FOR FORMING A GLASS PREFORM
A method of forming a glass preform of predetermined length comprises providing a length of glass material to be separated to form a preform length and a remaining length; forming a notch in the glass material; inducing a tensile stress in excess of the tensile strength of the glass in an area adjacent to the notch; and separating the preform length from the remaining length at the notch.
MECHANICALLY FORMING CRACK INITIATION DEFECTS IN THIN GLASS SUBSTRATES USING AN ABRASIVE SURFACE
A method for forming an initiation defect in a glass substrate to facilitate separating the glass substrate into a plurality of substrates is provided. The method includes providing the glass substrate and contacting a broad surface of the glass substrate with an abrasive surface thereby forming a field of initiation defects in the broad surface of the glass substrate. The field of initiation defects has a width of at least about three millimetres between outermost initiation defects. At least one initiation defect is heated with a laser source. The at least one initiation defect is cooled with a cooling fluid such that a crack initiates from the at least one initiation defect, the crack extending through a thickness of the glass substrate and propagating across the glass substrate to separate the glass substrate into the plurality of substrates.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR HANDLING AND REMOVING A PERIPHERAL REGION OF A GLASS SHEET
A glass manufacturing system including a scoring assembly. The scoring assembly including a scoring device disposed along a first surface of a glass ribbon and a backing device disposed along a second surface of the glass ribbon directly opposite the scoring device. The scoring assembly is configured to delineate a peripheral region from a central region of the glass ribbon by forming a vertical score line along the first surface as the glass ribbon moves downward in a y-axial direction between the scoring device and the backing device.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR ALIGNING SCORING NEEDLES AND FOR SCORING GLASS SUBSTRATES
A method is provided for aligning scoring tools and for scoring glass, in particular thin glass, along predetermined scoring lines in preparation for breaking along the score. Glass substrates, in particular thin glass substrates, produced by such method are also provided. The method includes the determination of the actual orientation of the cutting edge of the scoring tool and aligning of the cutting edge to a target orientation of the cutting edge.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR CUTTING GLASS LAMINATED SUBSTRATE
Provided is an apparatus for cutting a glass laminated substrate including a glass layer laminated on a substrate and having a first surface, which is a surface of the glass laminated substrate closer to the glass layer, and a second surface, which is a surface that is opposite the first surface. The apparatus includes a support configured to support the glass laminated substrate, a first cutter provided to cut the glass layer from the first surface of the glass laminated substrate, and a second cutter provided to cut the substrate from the first surface of the glass laminated substrate.
Apparatuses and methods for heating moving continuous glass ribbons at desired lines of separation and/or for separating glass sheets from continuous glass ribbons
Apparatuses and methods for heating moving continuous glass ribbons at desired lines of separation and/or for separating glass sheets from continuous glass ribbons are disclosed. An apparatus includes a translatable support portion and a heating apparatus coupled to the support portion. The heating apparatus is configured to contact the continuous glass ribbon across at least a portion of a width of the continuous glass ribbon at the desired line of separation as the support portion moves in a draw direction, thereby preferentially applying heat to a first side of the continuous glass ribbon at the desired line of separation as the continuous glass ribbon moves in the draw direction.
Apparatus and method for creating crack initiation sites in a self-fracturing frangible member
An apparatus comprises a stressed glass member and an actuator mounted on the stressed glass member. A power source is coupled to the actuator. An abrasion structure is disposed between the actuator and the stressed glass member. The abrasion structure comprises abrading features in contact with the stressed glass member. The abrading features have a hardness higher than a hardness of the stressed glass member. When energized by the power source, the actuator is configured to induce movement of the abrasion structure that causes the abrading features to create scratches in the stressed glass member to a depth sufficient to initiate fracture of the stressed glass member.
GLASS ETCHING AND BREAKING APPARATUS AND METHODS OF USING THE SAME
A glass etching and breaking apparatus comprises a glass cutting tool and a flexible bridging element for inducing a score line into a pane of glass and aiding in breaking the pane of glass along the score line. The cutting tool is removable and storable within the body of the glass cutting apparatus. A magnet is provided for holding the cutting tool in place and for holding metal or magnetic objects. Methods of using the same are further provided.
